Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I have an emachines T2542 computer where I just replaced the motherboard with an identical numbers matching unit I bought from ebay. I was informed that if I replaced my MB with an identical match I should be able to boot up from my exisiting hard drive. I am not able to do this. The computer MB will only spin the hard drive but does not seem to read it (I see the LED on the front of the computer on telling me the hard drive is being read and I can hear it spinning but the BIOS says no operating system found). All the numbers are the same on the MB except for one chip that is a different version (older version looks like) but that is it. Please help.

I have two hard drives and when I move the IDE cable from my original HD that came with computer to another one I have, it will read it. I had another motherboard that was not a direct replacement for my computer and it did read my original hard drive, so I can't explain why this motherboard does not seem to read it. I checked to make sure the boot sequence is in fact the hard drive first and it is. I am using a different IDE cable from the other computer that I borrowed this spare hard drive from but it looked like my original IDE cable. The reason I'm using the other computer's cable is that my had a small nick in it, although I never had a problem with it but I was just being cautious and I thought I might as well use the cable that was not nicked.

Restart your computer, and enter BIOS-setup.
First, check that the motherboard has detected the hard-drive.
Second, check the "boot-order", to make the hard-drive the "primary" device for booting.
Save/Exit from BIOS-setup, and try again.

Can you remove the hard-drive, and temporarily connect it to another computer? Does that other computer detect the drive? Can you "browse" files on that hard-drive?

Dont power

If the m/b is truly broken (not some other component) you will have replace the motherboard. You may be able to salvage the RAM and the processorcooler from the motherboard. You may be able to buy a working identical replacement either from new or second-hand (ebay).
You might even be able to diagnose the fualt and repair it/have it repaired by an expert the motherboard if you are very lucky, but this usually not worthwhile.
Before taking these steps, ensure that the problem IS that he motherboard is actually broken.

I am trying to find the power switch diagram for an emachine t6520 thanks

On a Asus motherboard its not designed for eMachines systems because they come with a proprietary setting on the case. So what you need to is take the emachines motherboard that you took out and take the new motherboard that you bought and match the two. If there is a difference then you need to return it or buy a new case and you shift all the hardware from the emachines to the new case. If not buy a similar replacement board from emachines or ebay and you can find one and buy it. The Power setting is on all motherboards but some are different then others.

I would suggest this generic Power On switch,

1) http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html,

and the Red, and Black twisted pair of wires go to the Power On switch.

Your statement of ,"....don't know which of the colored pairs of wires go.....", leads me to believe you may have all of the Front Panel wires disconnected.

How about information as to where ALL the Front Panel wires go?
(Provided I have correctly interpreted your statement)

Back in the time that the eMachines T2542 was made, TriGem was the motherboard manufacturer.

The Model Name of the motherboard is Imperial, and the Model Number of the motherboard, could have been one of four variations offered.

Model Name: Imperial
Model numbers could be G, GL, GV, or GLVE
(Imperial G, Imperial GL, Imperial GV, or Imperial GLVE)

ALL four variations used the same Front Panel header.
(The connector on the motherboard the Front Panel wires connect to, is named the Front Panel header)

I would like you to view this page,

http://www.e4allupgraders.info/dir1/ecase/support/front_panel_header_support.shtml

Scroll down to the heading -
Trigem Imperial Front Panel Header Pinout.

A) Pins 1, 2, and 3 are for the Power On LED light.

B) Pins 5 and 6 are for the HarDDrive activity LED light.
(Pin 4 is not used. NC. No Connection)

C) Pins 7 and 8 are for the Power On switch

D) I wouldn't connect any wires to Pins 9 and 10, nor Pins 11 and 12

E) Pins 14 and 15 are for the Reset switch. (The button you press to restart your computer.
If the T2542 doesn't have a Reset switch, don't worry about it. There are many other ways to restart your computer)

F) Pins 17 18, and 20 are for an internal speaker.
This speaker is used for BIOS Beep Codes.

In the chart to the right, you will see GRD used many times.
GRD stands for Ground.
ANY Black wire in the twisted pair of wires, is a Ground wire.

Most of the eMachines I have worked on, use a Red, and Black pair of twisted wires for the Power On switch.
I could be mistaken on the T2542.

Best method, is to follow the color code of the wires that come from Pins 7 and 8, and be sure.

Hi,
Your better off replacing the motherboard with an Emachine spare, this is because your hard drive will not notice the change when replaced so you can still use all your programs.
If you was to get another motherboard with a different chipset or GPU (graphics processing unit) then chances are the operating system will not boot resulting in loss of data and programs due to a clean install.

I want to expand my memory, so I went to Fry's with my computer model number and bought a 1Gig memory card, brought it home and the pin configuration doesn't match. The one I bought has two rows of pi

Go to http:\\www.pby.com and look at the memory configurator. You will be asked about your system (make and model). They will then advise you of the specific part number for your memory. Keep in mind, you should never expand upon existing memory. It is always better to replace the memory completely so you don't have to deal with any manufacturing conflicts. Take your new found part number and plug it in at amazon.com

To replace 1 GB of memory completely should cost about $45.00 USD.

Emachine t2542

When you say out, do you mean they are broken, or just disconnected? Most of these computers have a plug on the end of the wires to the front panel and it just plugs into the system board. If you look at the board you'll see where the front panel wires go. Sometimes it's hard to read the small type, but there are labels on the board that tell you what connector does what.
