I am having the same problem on my Acer Aspire 3614 WLMi laptop. Internet delivered audio is jittery (this either audio on its own or the audio part of online video). My internet connection is fine: 5-10 Mb/s download. The problem started a few days ago and I suspected a malware infection, but a number of anti-virus scans detected nothing obvious. Windows XP is running more slowly than normal particularly at startup.

I got a warning about imminent disk failure upon one particular restart and I am beginning to believe that some sort of hard disk issue is indeed the real source of the problem - however this hard disk is a recent replacement (2 months ago), which is why I suspected malware rather than disk errors.

To confirm the healthy status of the hard disk, I attempted a Windows 7 installation on a sizeable unallocation partition. IT FAILED TO COMPLETE.

My conclusion is that my new-ish hard disk has gone faulty or there is a motherboard issue on my laptop affecting the hard disk interface.

After putting up with the jittery audio and excessive CPU usage and disk activity I came across the solution accidentally:

I ran the VBS script posted on that page to reset DMA mode on all ATA devices and after a reboot, my Acer Aspire 3610 was back to normal again!

The hard disk controller had apparently reverted to PIO access rather than DMA.

Does this happen only when viewing online audio/video, as opposed to inserting a music-CD into your CD-drive, and using Windows Media Player to play the music?

If so, then how fast is your Internet connection?
It probably is too slow to download and play at the same time.
So, when you click on a YouTube video, click "pause",
and let the download proceed for a minute or two,
and then click "play", to play what has been downloaded.

Besides Windows Media Player - is there any other media player or jukebox that will work properly on XP Prof??

There are many Media Player like, VLC, MPCSTAR, WinAmp that is WinXP compatible.

You can also install the codec eg. K-Lite Codec Pack or K-Lite Mega Codec Pack @ will play most of the video/audio formats.

Hope it helps.

When I try and play any video at 1080p I get stuttering video and audio that is out of sync. I've got a little program that renders the video and reports what codecs were used and for some reason it plays...

If the video is MKV, I had the same problem. remove Klite, and install CCCP. I did and it was smooth.

also with HiDef content being huge on the hard drive, and windows being very lazy, after you have a hidef on your hard drive, do a defrag on your hard drive so it plays the film from the same area of the HDD so the PC isn't working as hard. keep in mind 1080p can be 24Mb a second, and usually the HDD only has 16mb cache, so the smoother you can make things the better.

Hope this helps?
