Try turning the printer off with all lids shut, then turn back on, then lift the covers and an extra 'bit' appears at back of cradle enabling the cartidge to bed against it (sorry for vagueness, did this 'blind' over phone to help me bruv)

All you have to do is turn off the printer, then turn it on and open the scanner tray. The ink cartridge holder should then slide to the left and its easy from there.

This is for an MP160, but they may be close to the same thing...
NOTE: This machine does not load ink while in the center position as some smaller printers used to.
There is insufficient space while in the centered position to put the cartridges in and you may end up damaging the thing!
Once you open the whole top [including the scanner bed], if the print carriage doesn't move on its own, pull it carefully ALL the way to the left. [This may not be advised by Canon, but I had to do it!]
You should now have space [in front of carriage] to put the cartridges in. It might even have a "B" for "Black" and a "C" for "Color" visible on the carriage top to help you - mine does.
Load a cartridge first in a 'forward' tilted position [front lower than back]; push cartridge gently to rear of carriage slot, then lift front of cartridge up to a level position and it should click in.
I repeat, at least in the MP160, it WILL NOT work for you while the carriage is in the center position.
