My Garmin Nuvi 265W Won't turn on

Lets put the battery issue aside for the moment. A Nuvi should power up as soon as the charger is plugged into it. It will turn on even if the battery has been removed. Of course, once you remove the charger, the unit will die immediately because the battery has been removed.

The first thing I would suggest doing is trying a reset. There are 2 ways to reset a Nuvi 2xx or 2xxW.

On some units (earlier versions), there is a flap on the bottom of the unit that you press in momentarily to reset the unit. There will be a label on the bottom with the units serial number and the word "reset" on the label.

The other method (newer versions) is to slide the on/off power switch to the left and hold it for at least 10 seconds.

Another common problem with these units are loose/broken connections on the rear USB port. There are 5 pins on this port. If the power pins are loose/broken, the unit will not be able to charge the battery. The unit will not turn on because the battery is dead. Even if you plug in the charger, there battery will not charge.

The unit will not charge the battery if it won't turn on.

My Tomtom 300 Go won't charge?

It appears that the battery will not hold a (good) charge anymore. If it is still under warranty, contact TomTom to address that problem. They may replace the unit for you.
It is not unusual for (rechargeable) batteries to loose it's capability to hold a good charge if it is plugged in (to a power source) all the time, even while it is not in use.

My nuvi 1450 won't turn on and the garmin website updater won't reconize it hooked up to my computer even my computer won't reconize it.

I had the same problem with mine and got it working by doing the following while on the phone to Garmin. Plug your charger cord into the device and your computer (do not use a laptop, you need the higher current from a desktop for this). Hold the power button down for as long as it takes for the Garmin logo to display, this could be as much as 1 minute. As soon as the image shows on the screen, release the power button. If your Garmin isn't completely shot you will see it boot up.
If you have the Garmin Web Updater program on your computer, run it and update the operating system software to insure you have the latest greatest from Garmin. Once that is done, update your XML data files - they'll be on the list of updates if you need them. Once those are done you can update any voice or language files you'd like.
Lastly, leave your GPS plugged in at least an hour or two to give it a charge. Overnight would be better to insure your battery is really well powered up.
At this point your Garmin should function normally. The Garmin tech I spoke with told me some units start acting funky when the battery runs down too low and if it's REALLY dead it won't even take a charge or power up when you hook up your charger cord. Try holding the power button for as long as it takes to get a spark & you should be on your way. If not, call Garmin's support number for your locale & they're do their best to get you back up & running again.
Cheers, Jeff

My little buddy won't turn on, it's charged, plugged into computer. green light won't come on at all. I held the power button on for 10 -15 sec with no response.

I have 2 of these devices. Try using a cellular phone charger with the same plug at the end and plug it in. I have waited 5-10 minutes after doing this and they have come back to life and turn on. Maybe it will work for you.

I have a question about my newly purchased Nextar GPS. I would like to know if it is ok to leave it in my car (as long as the temperature is not extreme cold or hot) with the charger plugged in to the car...

On some cars the power continues to go to the cigarette lighter socket when the car is turned off but on others it doesn't. If your cigarette lighter socket still has power when the car is turned off then it should not be left plugged in as it will shorten the life of the battery.

Also you should plug the charger out before starting the car as the alternator can send a surge of power through the system when the car starts and many satnavs have been burned out by this surge.

Unit will not power on.

its probably not the battery, your gps should run even without a battery if the power port/circuit is ok. unfortunately this is a common problem that the usb port gets damaged with this and many other model of magellans gps systems.

if you had it plugged in to the car charger, make sure the green light is on while charging, if its not, you might have a blown fuse in the charger or the fuse for the cigarette adapter in the car.

if the green light is on, try letting it on for a few hours, then try and turn it on. if and when it turns on, you can verify if its charging by going to the system settings then the power option. the battery bar should turn green and move from right to left if its charging. if the battery is slightly low but the bar is not moving left to right, then its not charging.

you can check the charging by using the usb cable provided with your unit and hook it up to your computer to verify if its charging. but i suspect it has a bad power port (usb connector)

i hate to be the barer of bad news, because rarely do i get a good rating for being the barer of bad news, but hopefully you just have a bad charger or a blown fuse in your adapter or car.

good luck

Garmin nivi 200 won,t turn on

The mini-USB jack needs to be either resoldered or replaced. When the jack is loose, you will not be able to charge the internal battery. The jack becomes loose from overuse. The jack needs more mechanical support to the pronted circuit board. I have fixed this problem many times.

Dead unit

My Quest2 has a short in it that drains the battery even when it is turned off. But the battery lasts normal 15 to 20 hours when fully charged and unit is on. Whenever the battery is completely dead, I have to place it on the charger for a hour or two before the unit will even start even though it is plugged plugged in. The battery can be replaced by the staff at batteries plus for under $60.00
