An area near the boot sector on your hard drive is faulty or corrupt. Go to www.grc.com & purchase a program called spinrite. This utility will in 97% of cases, fix the Hard Drive problem you are having and allow windows to boot correctly. This will be fantastic if there is a lot of data on the drive that you haven't backed up yet (precious photos) If there isn't any thing on the drive worth keeping, buy your self a new Hard Drive and reinstall Windows. We see a lot of this problem in the workshop. Check to see if the machine has an extended warranty to claim the cost back. Sometimes the retailer you purchased it from offer this as part of the purchase agreement. Spinrite will cost you around $90 us, but its worth it. I run it on all my home machines every 12 months as a preventative and have never experienced a failure.
Since you can get into the BIOS, check if the S.M.A.R.T. function for hard disk is enabled. This should warn you of impending failure of your hard disk next time.
Good Luck

I think the problem is form your hard disk? Does your hard disk make any noise? Or maybe the windows is corrupt.

Loose your computer to see if you can do one or two things that can help your PC improve.

I wish you the best of luck

Take care.

D610 loop on boot

Hi phatheadrowl,

I see you have a boot issue with your Dell Laptop.

As soon as you see the Black screen before the Dell Logo keep on Tapping f8 then a list will show up select Last known good configuration First, if this does not work follow the below proceeds.

since it is rebooting on its own, we can go an boot into safe mode, to do that once the system is rebooting and you se the dell Logo on the screen keep on tapping F8 a list will show up and we need to select "Safe Mode" , once in Safe Mode it will be windows but all drivers are disable on that point and the video will be different so do not worry, once we are in Safe Mode click on Start, then click on Accessories, click on system tools, then look for system restore then perform a restore on the system to a date when it was working fine or not rebooting on its own on the issue.

And if you have a Windows disc that came with your Dell you run the Recovery Environment and do a Fixboot but if you do not have the Windows Disc Fixboot will not work without a Disc.

I hope this helps.

If you have the Disc please send me a message so I can provide you detail on how to perform Fixboot / fixmbr

I have a Dell Dimension 24000 that has been in storage for a year. I recently tried to boot it up so I could find a couple of files. It starts booting up; windows logo appears and shows things are loading...

try starting in safe mode.

when you power on the PC, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.

this will give you the option to start in safe mode and can possibly let you find out why you cannot start up.

if it does start this way, you should at least be able to retrieve the files you were looking for.

The laptop loads up, lets me sign in, then goes blank, no icons

Try booting to the safe mode (F8 at boot) and see if you can log in via the safe mode. If you can't, try booting to your Windows CD, go to recovery console and run CHKDSK /R
If you still can't log in, try running diags see if the hard drive lists a failure.
if no hardware failure found, there and none of those solutions work, then re-installing windows will likely be the final resolution

Black Screen Dell 600 Laptop

Hi,
The display drivers maybe corrupt.

Boot the machine into safe mode. Right click on My Computer (XP) Computer (Vista) and select manage from the sub menu.
When the window pops up select Device Manager.
A device list will populate. When it has look down the list for Display Adapters. Click on the + icon next to Display Adapters to it expands. Right click on the display adapter and select uninstall.

Restart the computer and let it boot in normal mode.
If it boots in normal mode let it detect the Display and install the drivers for it.
I would be a good idea to update the display drivers via the Dell support website.

If it still won't display in normal mode please post back.

Good luck.

PC BOOTS HALF WAY

Try booting into safe mode. If it's a driver problem, safe mode will allow you to start Windows with only the bare minimum of hardware and drivers being engaged. To get to safe mode, press the F8 button on your keyboard during the Windows boot process until it takes you to a screen to let you select Normal, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, etc. I would suggest not using anything other than just Safe Mode. From there, uninstall any software or new drivers that you recently installed. Alternatively, you can use the System Restore feature to rollback to a previous restore point.

3. Select safe mode
4 Hit enter on the next screen and logon using the administrator or your name

Booting problem

Try putting the computer into safe mode by holding down on the F8 button and selecting safe mode during the boot process. Once you get to the safe mode screen and windows appears, restart the computer.

If that doesn't fix the problem you will have to restore Windows.
