Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

Passat 2000 W Reg Had the rear brakes and disks changed then a month later had a front tyre replaced and as I drove off something went tinkle tinkle on the road (like someone had left a spanner). Week later the ABS light and the brake light come on with the usual STOP Brake Fail Service Manual message. Had brakes checked but they could find no fault. I've tried the ABS under controlled conditions and it works. What could the problem be?? I've been running the car under these conditions and no problems other than the annoying warning lights for about 3 months now. I've been looking at forums for some time and there seem to be a couple of possibilities. I've also checked the fluid resevoir - over full. The only thing I've noticed is that the float in the resevoir appears to be slightly to one side and as you tap the resevoir it may realign itself. My thoughts are is it possible to damage the float sensor when the brake fluid is pushed back when the brakes where changed?

The ABS module has a history of wearing out on VWs. Nothing wrong with the brakes themselves, but the ABS module would need to be replaced to stop the lights coming on... but the problem is a new ABS module can be very expensive for a new one (~$900) or you can sometimes get a rebuilt one for a couple of hundred dollars.

While the ABS is broken, your car has regular normal brakes like cars have had for decades.
