Need to fit a tall cornice on a new kitchen but my sliding mitre saw splinters the cornice

You need much smaller teeth and pitch for softer materials. Hardware stores have a list of types of blades for Stone, wood, plaster, laminates, etc. Your service manual for the saw should have this info also, as it depends on the diameter of the saw as well. If all else fails, new blades are printed with their optimum use, check each one in a self serve store.
Cheers.

Bought the makita 18 volt lithium power saw which i thought would cut a 40mm worktop in fact i struggles to cut 9mm ply is this it's limit or is there something wrong with the batteries

I have a Ridgid brand battery operated circular saw 18 Volt and it works very well for a battery operated saw. It eats 2x4's and 2x6's very well. I have noticed that when the blade only gets slightly dull it will not cut worth a darn. Keep a sharp blade on it and maybe try a different battery. A battery powered saw is NOT a replacement for a plug in saw, but they sure as heck are handy.

Cutting a 40mm worktop should be no problem unless it is a hard wood. If it is a hard wood you might need to get a plug in saw and a very good blade.

Having a new floor in the kitchen and my faithfull

Buy a machine that will is the first thought , otherwise get the kitchen fitter to raise the worktops above the washer

You could try taking off the top lid and removing the feet underneath which will give you some room

Make sure that you place a sheet of plastic over the top of the machine from side to side and tape it in place if you do remove the top

That is in case you spill anything on the worktop which then drips inside the machine
