Why heater coils glow?

It sounds like you're describing one of two things. The hot surface ignitor in a gas-fired furnace, or the resistive heat strips in an electric furnace.

The hot surface ignitor in a gas-fired furnace lights the burners. This ignitor in modern furnaces serves the same purpose as the standing pilot flame did in older furnaces. It provides the required heat to ignite the gas at the burners. Without an ignition source, a gas-fired furnace cannot provide heat. When the ignitor is activated it will glow bright orange or yellow.

The resistive heat strips in an electric furnace actually provide the heat to a home or building. When the furnace turns on, the heat strips are activated and usually glow orange when they reach peak temperature. In almost all cases, the heat strips are not easily seen or accessed without removing covers or panels inside the furnace.

Fan doesnt work on heat cool ok

Often the fan will cycle on and off on the heat mode. A cold air prevention mode is often built into modern Ac units whereby the indoor fan wont turn on until the internal system pressure is up to a certain point and heat is available to pump into the room. If the system cant come up to pressure or temperature then possibly the system is low on gas. Place your hand on the large pipe leaving the outdoor unit, it should be HOT when the system is on heating mode and running. If not Hot, then it is low on gas.

I have a heating and air unit. the air conditioner works and the fan will work. but when i turn on the heater it will not ignite. i have checked the thermostat and it sends the signal to the unit to turn...

To get proper heat, keep your temp setting at 30+ degreeand also mode in "heat "position. If still no heat, check your heating sensorfor closed circuit by an OHMs metre. It it's with RV, check power to RV.Ifit's with heating element check power to element. If power is there but stillno heat means element defective. Replace new heating element. Thanks.

I have a Rheem furnace rglh-10nbrjr that motor runs but flame does not light. If I turn up thermostat, the fan comes on and I hear a click after 10 or 15 seconds. I see no spark or anything from electronic...

Hi, you shouldn't smell any gas until the pilot flame is etablished. The sequence of operation is the small inducer motor will start on a call for heat, Then on the motor you should have a poly type tube, clear, that runs over to a pressure switch. It is a round silver part that the hose connects to, The pressure from motor closes a set of contacts and you will hear a click. This is telling the electronic ignition to start to spark and light the pilot or hot surface ignitor, which ever you have. If you have no spark and the pressure switch is closed, you have a faulty ignitor board or module. To check the switch, it will have 2 wires going to it. Just take a piece of insulated wire and touch across the 2 terminals. It should fire up. If not, the module or board, ignitor has failed. You will need to take all of the numbers from it amd go to a appliance parts house to get a new one. Don't forget how it wires back in, or you will have more problems.

The reset button should be a small round red button that you just push in to reset. If the induced draft motor comes on as soon as thermostat calls for heat then the next thing to check is the ignitor. It may be a hot surface or spark ignitor. It should glow or spark depending on the type, and you should be able to see it clearly. The ignitor should be located by pilot assembly right beside burners. If the ignitor does not work the furnace willnot procede in lighting sequence. If ignitor is not working then it must be replaced. Usually this is pretty easy if you can get repair parts.Remove screw holding ignitor in place and disconnect wires. Install new one and try it. Good luck. Thanks

On heating the unit go to a three cycle try on the burner then shot down. The blower will come on but the burn will not. Replaced the flame sensor but stayed the same

Does your unit have a induced draft motor? if so is it coming on when thermostat is calling for heat. If not I would replace it. Next I would check spark or hot surface ignitors. If induced draft motor is working but ignitors are not then replace them. If you get to this point and you don't get pilot or main burner I would replace the control board. As a last resort I would change gas valve. I hope this helps you and god luck. Thanks

I have the same Ruud Achiever unit & it's not working.

It sounds like it will need a hot surface igniter. This is the part that glows when furnace is turned on, and tells gas valve to release gas for it to ignite. At that point funace is lit, it heats up flame sensor witch inturn tells fan to start.

Gas Furnace is not heating anymore.

the fan you hear come on at a call for heat is most likely just the inducer motor. the click you hear is probably the relay for the hot surface ignitor which should glow red, then in turn ignite the main burners. your going to have to determine if the ignitor is coming on. if it isnt the ignitor is bad and will need to be replaced. if it comes on and than shuts off after a few seconds the ifc board is probably at fault

Therm calls for heat, enducer fan turns on, pressure switches closes, ignitor sparks, gas valve opens. If ignitor does not spark, it will go to try a few times then lockout. Do you have a led code on your control board, if so what is it blinking? Could be ignitor bad only..
