Question about Sony Televison & Video
How old is your DVD recorder/player?
It sounds like it needs a service!
The usual problem with DVD players/recorders not reading discs is that the laser output is starting to fail - and consequently the laser light emitted is insufficient for the system to "read" through the minute "holes" in the disc.
It's possible to have the laser replaced, but this would cost you at least £50, depending on where you live.
Initially, you could try buying (or borrowing) a laser cleaning disc. These cost around £3 to £5 depending on where you buy & live, and have a small brush on the lower side of the disc. Insert this into your player and run the disc for a couple of minutes. If there are any dust particles that have been blocking the light output from your laser head, then this may remove it and might solve the problem.
If this fails, then it seems likely that the laser head is not producing enough output and would have to be replaced with a new one.
Also, you could try playing a CD on your DVD player as these discs contain far less information than a video disc (DVD) and the laser head may be able to cope with this.
If the CD plays ok, then you will know that the reason why it won't play DVD's is the light output has started to fade due to the age or excess use of your system.
