Check the belt that drives the brush head, you most likely burned it up and you need to replace it.

What is causing the beater bar brush to spin extremely fast?

HI, it's Jim from Crucial Vacuum!

First thing is to be sure to unplug your vacuum. Once you begin smelling a burning smell it's essential to stop vacuuming immediately.

One of two things may be happing here:

1) Your brush roll may need replacing. It's possible that the sides where it attaches to the vacuum have been worn down with age. The bristles falling off is a clear indicator that it's time to replace the brush roll. Also, look for debris, or hair that's wrapped around the brush. Remove all of this with either a razor, or a scissor.

2) Check your vacuums belt. Is it wrapped around the brush roll at all, or is too loose? If so, this means there's no tension around your brush roll and it could be causing your vacuum to overwork the motor and overheat, hence the smell.

Clean this area out and then replace the brush roll and belt. You should be seeing a noticeable difference in both your vacuums suction, and a lack in the burning smell.

Why is my DC24 not working

You may have an object caught between the belt and brush roll.
Remove brush roll cover and see if that is the case.

Regards,
Dennis.

Burning smell Kenmore 50558

If the burning smell is an electrical smell it could be motor or wiring problems which are best handled by a professional. If it smells like burning rubber it is probably the belt. If it smells like burnt wood it could be the belt slipping on the brush roll, if the brush roll is made of wood. Dust and debris can also accumulate behind the end caps of the brush roll causing friction which can cause a burning wood smell.

Dirt Devil R088100. Cloth Was Sucked Into Hole Below Dirt Holder

Brad, Hopefully it is the belt that you smell burning. I would start by removing the underneath side of the vacuum head. Normally just a few screws that are meant to be remove for general maintanence and circumstances such as this. After removing the screws this should reveal the dirty side of life to you. You may need to remove the roller brush, and inspect the ends to make sure the brush rolls freely while holding the ends. If not the ends may need to be cleaned of hair and strings: ends should pop of and a shaft runs through the middle connecting them. Clean and replace. Move on up the path the dirt travels. The neck where the head and vacuum come together is the next jamming point, if this is where the cloth is lodged chances are the motor may have over heated due to clogging. Your vacuum may have a automatic shut off. You will need to contact Dirt Devil to see if there is a reset for the motor. There are propellers / fan blades at the end of the neck just before the motor housing. This is most likely where the clothe has logged itself causing the brushes on the electric motor to emit the burning smell, if you can remove all obstructions and the unit still does not turn on, check with dirt devil about the reset, Hope this helps.

Vax mach 5 burning smell and revving loud

The revving/burning is because the belt is burning off and the power head motor is running without load...
Flip the carpet power head upside down on the rug and look for visible screws and screwdriver release slots on the bottom plate of the head.
When you remove the burned belt determine the cause. Will the brush roll freely or is it jammed with hair and fiber?. Clean the burned rubber from the motor shaft before replacing the broken belt, available at a vac specialty shop.

Kenmore Progressive Model # 116 25914507

I had the same problem with my vacuum. I called in for technical service and was told to push the "reset button". It turns out that there is a small red button right next to the dirt indicator light. I pushed the button, plugged the vacuum back in and started it up and it worked like a charm! :) Hope this helps!

The red light tells you that that there is a clog, either in the hose or down by the brush roll. The smell if it is rubber smelling, then it is the belt and maybe the brush roll. If it is an electrical smell, then probably the motor. But parts for these are always available, they went bankrupt several years ago and aren't in business anymore.
