Yes you can, but you can't get a replacement battery. I used a IPod Gen4 replacement battery, which seems to work well. Undo the 2 screws at the bottom and un-clip the top. Cut the wire off the old battery and join to the new as follows - Black wire to Black wire, Red wire to Red wire, White wire to yellow wire and solder and then cover joints with tape. Replace cover - Took me 10mins.

I bought one of these batteries off ebay (Battery for Apple iPod 4G 4th Gen Photo ). It's a lot smaller and has the red black and white leads you mention but the alba has 2 red, 2 black and 1 yellow wire. Am I misunderstanding something?

Manufacturers often stick to the same remote frequencies, so give it a try. The old remote may work again, if you carefully clean the battery contacts. The reason it's not working now is probably because the batteries are not making food electrical contact.

I have just bought an Alba 2GB compact mp3 player and this seems a bit dumb but there is no indication of how to recharge it - how do I do this?

The Alba 2GB player uses AAA batteries (the wee pencil-width batteries often used in small appliances -- hair trimmers, etc.). You should be able to replace this, though I'd recommend investing in some decent rechargeables.
