Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Hi, I've got a GOODMANS GCR1875IP clock radio with Ipod dock and there is a constant buzzing coming from the unit. It sounds like others are having a similar problem when I searched the internet but is there anything that can be done to fix it,please?

So it sounds like I'm still going to have to get a technician involved then. There's no way I can do the testing at home?

Thank you for your help. You sound like you know what you're talking about!

You can get a similar problem on any audio equipment.

The buzzing noise on an audio circuit is caused by a grounding problem or by a defective component.

Test the radio on a different AC main.

If you still have the problem, then there is a faulty component.

In that case the unit must be taken apart and tested at component level by a technician.

If the clock is less than one year old, see if there is a phone number on manual, or call the retailer. This Items are supposed to have one year factory warranty and in that case the unit must be replaced.

You can do the testing yourself if you have technical training and experience on circuits.

A basic training on electronics is about six months course.

If you have training all you need is a multimeter and a capacitance meter.

Testing is mainly done reading continuity (measuring impedance) to check if components or parts of the circuit have conductivity (circuit is not open).

You set the multimeter to an appropriate Ohms scale, depending on the component you are testing.

Testing will start from power cord earth. Read if it has continuity. The unit must already be taken apart to measure impedance from soldering on board.

Then you test one or two resistors located directly on the ground AC circuit, before reaching the PSU big electrolytic capacitors.

Then yo have a look to capacitors, if any looks bulged or leaking , then that is already faulty. Capacitors can only be tested using a capacitance meter.

After that you locate putput lines from PSU (one on this unit), and control line from main circuit. You test resistors on output.
A technician will also read volts out, that is quicker, but for a newbie it will be better not to work on hot wires.

The only simple test that an untrained user can do is disconnecting the unit and testing it on a different main.
moving power cod and gently whacking the unit to see if anything changes.

If unit reacts positively to a whack test, then there is simply a broken contact inside. It will still require testing at component level and re-soldering.

I do not like to suggest the whack test because if the user will put to much strenght , the unit may result damaged.

Alarm clock and time w/ clok smooth ipod system

According to the instructions that we received with our clock. You should be able to get the Instruction manual from It is also supposed to be under the support section of the website but I couldn't find such a link.

However the "Operational Support" insert has the following:

Setting the clock
1. With the unit powered off, press and hold the "Clock/Display/Play/Pause Button" for at least 4 seconds.
2. While holding the "Clock/Display/Play/Pause Button", press the "Hour" and "Minute Buttons" to adjust the hour and minute on the time.
3. When the correct time is selected, release the "Clock/Display/Play/Pause Button" to set the clock

Setting the Alarms
1. With the unit powered off, press and hold the "AL1" or "AL2" Button for at least 4 seconds.
NOTE: An alarm icon will begin to flash on the LCD display.

2. While holding the "AL1" or "AL2" Button, press the "Hour" and "Minute Buttons" to adjust the hour and minute on the alarm time.

3. When the correct time is selected, release the "AL1" or "AL2" Button to set the clock.

Insignia clock radio goes to 12:00 after turning off power

I found this solution by reading some reviews. A reviewer said it was caused by a weak backup battery that powers the display. He said to change the lithium backup battery of the main unit with the backup battery in the remote. I tried it and now it works. I can turn the unit on and off and it doesn't reset my memory. But this hasn't solved my problem with setting the alarm.

Buzzer instead of radio

I have this radio too and from what I have read in a review on amazon suggests alarm does not tune to DAB only FM - very annoying! Contacted Goodman customer care and they suggested it was a problem with a component but maybe it is just the design.
