Just like the wheel bearing hubs are on a car. you might need snapring pliers channel lock poliers and possibly a slide hammer.. the reason is some have snap rings and others have cotter pins with a crown nut. was this of any help?

When I removed the rear wheel of my lawn tractor, the keyway fell out. how do I reinstall it?

I assume you are having trouble keeping the key in place while you slide the wheel back on?
I've sometimes used a bench grinder and taken the leading edge off the key (the edge catching the first part of the wheel as you slide it on) to stop it catching on the wheel slot, also a dab of thick grease under the key to help hold it in position.
Some coppercote or similar anti-seize grease in the wheel's key slot would be a good thing too.

Did you forget to reinsert the key or did it slide out while putting the wheel on. A quick way to check is if you remove the center cap and have someone put it in gear and try to go while you are watching the axle. If the axle is turning and the wheel is not then the key is missing.

I need to replace the two 21-inch blades on my Craftsman rideable lawn mower.

I just watched the service technician change mine. He pulled the rear differential release out, then after removing the hood, he put a hoist on the front and stood it upright on it's rear wheels, and easily replaced both blades with a socket wrench. That beats all the work of removing the deck and turning it upside down.

How to remove rear wheel of lawn tractor

You should be able to remove the bolt from the center with a 1/2" socket an slide it off the axle. You do not want to do any heavy hammering on the wheel because you could possibly drive the axle out of the transmission. MTD mowers are notorious for being hard to get the rear wheels off. If you do get them off or ever buy a new one, remove the rear wheels and coat the axles with anti-seize compound. Good luck

Removing tire from SEARS CRAFTSMAN LT1000 TRACTOR.

You need to remove the black rubber cap from the center of the wheel. Remove the "C" clip from the axle and the wheel should come off. The rear tires will have a square key in it. Do not loose the key.
