Cannot install ANY Windows OS on Aspire One AOA150

Hi,

I am having a weird issue. I am trying to install Windows XP orWindows 7 on an Aspire One AOA150 netbook, but it fails. It has a 160gbhdd, and I AM ABLE to install Ubuntu on it.

Here is what happening. I used a usb stick (tried two different, don't think the USB stick is the problem).

1. For Windows XP, I go through the text portion, and when I startthe GUI portion, I get the XP logo, and it just sits there forever. Ican see the bar under the logo scrolling, but it's not the smoothscrolling, it looks kinda choppy. There is no disk activity what soever(hdd or usb).

2. I tried with Windows 7, and similar things happen. It goesthrough the initial progress bar, then I see the Win 7 logo, then thelogo disappears and the screen turns black. It just sits there foreverwith no activity.

3. I've also tried to run a Windows Live USB, but similar thing happens - it just hangs at the beginning.

I have also upgraded the BIOS using the FN + ESC method off a flash drive, but it didnot make any difference. Also, I do not see the AHCI option in my BIOS(even after the update).

Ubuntu installs and works without any issues whatsoever. I have tried installing XP (both home and pro) and W7 from a USB DVD, but it's exactly the same as with the usb stick - hangs at the same point.

I have low leveled the hdd (filled it with zeros and there were no errors), so the hdd is good.

Thanks in advance.

Take out HDD (google around - there are videos explaining that, and service repair manual for Aspire One), connect to another PC, install and open up Active@ Partition Recovery, select this HDD, go through menu - Tools-Fix MBR (Create Typical MBR), in first popup window select Yes (agreing to fix MBR), in second select No (agreing to fix MBR and delete all partitions on HDD, because Yes- you agreing to fix MBR without deleting all partitions, but be sure you back up your data, if you have any). Then with Acronis Disk Director wipe this HDD. Then repeat fixing exactly the same with Active@ Partition Recovery. Go back to Acronis Disk Director, create partition - primary and set it active. Format with NTFS (if you want to Install XP or later, and if its not SSD). Then shut down PC, take out your HDD, back to the netbook. Now you can install any Windows if you haven't other problems with your netbook. Better try installing with external DVD drive, because USB drives sometimes fail.

And make sure you disabled D2D Recovery in BIOS-Main, because as said in Service Repair manual this
"Enables, disables D2D Recovery function. The function allows the user to create a hidden partition on hard disc drive to store operation system and restore the system to factory defaults."
    This should be disabled.

I have run into several issues with installing the OS with a USB on the Acers....I got around it by using an external dvd drive. I picked one up for around 45 bucks on ebay....booted off that and the install went through without incident.

I understand, when you said usb drive, I thought you were talking about a flash drive or usb drive....I didn't see the dvd part.

You know, if the hard drive you have is absolutely clean and does not have a EISA partition on it, you can put that hard drive into another laptop or attach it to a desktop with an adapter and install windows on it from another system, then when it is finished loading transfer the HDD back to the one and boot it up. Attach the Hdd to another computer using an EIDE/SATA to usb adapter and look at the drive through computer management > disc management. Look at the partitions on the disc. If one of them is an EISA partition, that is the partition that holds all the Acer info to keep the HDD only Acer and cannot be used on another computer as a boot device. If you remove this partition you can take this drive out of the One and use it on another machine. If you want to the tip on how to get rid of this partition it is below. Once you have windows loaded, the issue with this USB/ windows weirdness will go away. Not sure how or why this is happening.

    EISA Partition Delete

    1. Open a command prompt as administrator.

    2. Run Diskpart application by typing Diskpart in the command prompt.

    3. In the “Diskpart” prompt, enter rescan command and press Enter key to re-scan all partitions, volumes and drives available.

    4. Then type in list disk and press Enter key to show all hard disk drive available.

    5. Select the disk that contains the partition you want to remove. Normally, with just 1 hard disk, it will be disk 0. So the command will be:

    select disk 0

    Finish by Enter key.

    6. Type list partition and press Enter key to show all available and created partition in the disk selected.

    7. Select the partition that wanted to be deleted by using the following command, followed by Enter key:

    select partition x

where x is the number of the EISA based recovery partition to be removed and unlocked its space. Be careful with the number of this partition, as wrong number may get data wipes off.

    8. Finally, type in delete partition override and press Enter key.

Once the partition has been deleted, exit from Diskpart, and now users can use the much familiar and much easier Disk Management tool in Windows (diskmgmt.msc) to manipulate the freed unallocated partition. Users can create a new volume (partition) with this space, or simply merge it to existing partition by extending the size of the existing partition.

That sort of comes with a OS upgrade, in upgrades from XP to Win 7, I'm supprised that's the only thing that is a issue. I upgraded a old gateway (2005) from XP to Win 7 Pro N 64bit. and had some hardware issues to deal with. Consider yourself lucky. You can get use to it or search endlessly for a fix. Try the Acer forums, you may run across the issue.

Acer aspire one aoa150-1283 up grade Win XP to windows 7

Win 7 will use more resources and make it slower. It is a nice netbook, but still a netbook. Plus you need to consider drivers for, LAN, sound, and video.

Try testing with Win 7 advisor,

According to the Acer website this model does not support Windows 7. You can email them directly for further support information, but at this time they are not supporting it. The supported OS for this system is Windows XP.

WLAN problem

Hi,
Yes this is an OS problem. Mostly laptop vendors like ACER expects that the OS is Vista or Windows 7.

And these OS have default drivers of WLAN but unfortunately Windows XP don't have these drivers.

So you have only two options.
Either to upgrade your OS or to search for valid drivers of WLAN of Win-XP on Acer's website.

Please rate this solution properly if it was helpful to you.

With Regards,
