SOURCE: how to take a picture using display instead of view finder

I don't believe there is. Nikon call it Live View in other models, but its not mentioned in the D40 user manual.....

here's the full manual, if you'd like it.

I don't think anything is wrong with your camera. Just check the Manual.
Your camera has a view finder, to make pictures. Yes the little screen on the top left (Backside) As an extra the camera has live view, that can be switched on and off. because the live view consumes lots of power, it is advised to use the view finder. If you want to switch it on, you can do so in the settings menu. There go to the live view en switch it on.

I cant view anything from the finderscope in relation to the telescope

They must be lined up, and if you are using a higher power eyepiece, this must be more precise as your field of view is smaller.
There will be some type of adjustment on the finderscope, probably 3 thumbscrews around the holder tube.

Put in a low power eyepiece and point the scope at a local feature such as a streetlight or distant building. Get this centered in the eyepiece. Then adjust the finder only so the feature is centered in the finder as well.

Put in a higher power eyepiece and center the feature again in the telescope EP, and readjust the finder centering by itself, if needed.

Then choose a bright star and by moving the scope mount, place this in the center of the finder. Check if the star is properly centered in the EP as well and if not, move the scope mount until it is. Then finally adjust the finder centering by itself.

When I look through the viewfinder on my Nikon D40x it is blurry and looks out of focus, but when but after I take the picture it is clear on the lcd screen. Is there a setting I can change or is something...

Adjust view finder focus as you will see setting there, to view correct focus in view finder itself.
Camera is just fine because it is taking good focus pictures.

Mismatch between viewfinder and photograph

Is your camera an SLR, if so then your mirror might be at the wrong angle, if that is the case then you need to have a specialist tilt the mirror, if your camera is not a SLR then this is a common problem when taking pictures from a short distance away from your subject, as the view finder is above the lense so what appears centered in the view inder will be much higher up in the lense, there are two ways to fix this, one is to use the LCD, or most cameras have correction marks in the view finder, and these show where the actual edges of what the lense sees are, use the correction marks.

View finder

Ok. On your viewfinder, there might be a round dial. Turn it to adjust focus. Otherwise, sometimes viewfinders are like that... blurry, especially electronic.
