Oil pressure is the amount of hydraulic force used to move the oil through the engine parts. High pressure can be caused by

  1. wrong type of oil, 50 weight in an engine thatshould have 5W-30,
  2. plugged part of the oil system,
  3. sludge in oil passages or very dirty oil filter,
  4. internal engine part(s) being out of tolerance,
  5. clearances too tight on bearings or oil pump, or
  6. faulty sending unit or
  7. Gauge just showing high pressure.
So the first way to check is by just changing the oil, go ahead and do it. It might fix the problem.

The viscosity of the oil (higher number, higher viscosity) can cause high oil pressure--especially when the engine is cold. You shouldn't require any higher viscosity than 30 Wt and 10-30 Wt is great for cold weather. If you have had a fairly recent oil change (with new filter), the pressure sender on the engine block could be defective. That should be verified by checking the pressure with a mechanical gauge. Hope this helps!

No damage will occur. Have you checked the oil pressure with a manual test gage? If not do that and please understand GM oil pressure gages are prone to reading high pressure when the sender is defective.

some say, it's good to have high oil pressure. but it is abnormal to the system. does it means there is restrictons from oil gallery that makes the oil pressure go high. any kind of motor or engine needs change oil. you had manaul recommending, when you change oil and what kind of motor oil you're going to use. change your oil filter too.

Oil pressure is still reading high even though I just changed the filter and oil.

A high oil pressure reading is a good thing, low oil pressure is something to worry about. Normally with a cold start, your oil pressure will remain high until the engine has reached operating temperature, then drop a bit, but again, high oil pressure readings are a good sign of a healthy engine. One other factor to consider is the viscosity of your oil, if your engine uses 5w30 and you switch it to a higher viscosity such as 10w40, you may also see higher oil pressure readings, so be sure you are using the correct oil for your vehicle. I hope this has helped you! :)

Oil pressure gauge reads 80 yesterday it ran normal

The higher the oil pressure the better it is, if you had a recent oil change the oil pressure should be high. there is no problem with having high oil pressure.

Oil pressure too high

nothing wrong ignore and stop worrying, change oil every 6000miles and use cheapest from supermarket, change oil filter every third oil change to save money and pollution of the disposal of old oil filter. If you worried about high pressure then stop beleaving the adverts for synthetic oil and putting in oil thickening agents like slick or duckhams. You could get the sender units changes for the oil pressure but just go for a burn and enjoy and stop worrying its only a car when all is said and done

The sensor can show high pressure when that is not the case, they fail high not low, take the sender out and plug in a mechanical guage to verify this, that is the only way to be 100% sure.
