Hello

  1. Choose and purchase a Linksys router, taking into account your budget and computing habits.
  2. Step 2 Attach the antennas to the Linksys wireless router.
  3. Step 3 Place the router in a central location, making sure it's not surrounded by metal. (A signal can't be obtained through metal.) The router should be located so that the distance between clients (computers) is somewhat equal. This will create a better connection.
  4. Step 4 Plug the Ethernet cable into the "Internet" port on the back of the Linksys router.
  5. Step 5 Connect a computer to the router by plugging another Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer and attaching the other end to one of the available ports on the back of the router. You can choose any port except the one labeled "WAN."
  6. Step 6 Plug the router into an electrical outlet.
  7. Step 7 Wait for the power light to stop flashing, at which time the router is finished booting up. While the router is booting, the power light will be blinking. This process may take a few minutes to complete.
  8. Step 8 Reboot your computer so it can access a new IP address from the router through the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
  9. Configure the Router
  10. Step 1 Open your web browser, type " http://192.168.1.1/ " into the address bar and hit "Enter."
  11. Step 2 Use "Admin" as the username in the pop-up box and leave the password blank.
  12. Step 3 Connect to the Internet and click on "Internet Setup."
  13. Step 4 Select your connection type from the drop-down menu. Choose "DHCP" for cable modems or "PPPoE" for most DSL modems. If you are unsure of these options, check with your ISP.
  14. Step 5 Set a service set identifier (SSID) to identify the router and change the password.
  15. Step 6 Encrypt your wireless connection using a Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key. Under the "Wireless SecurityI need help getting wireless - mag-glass_10x10.gif" option, enter a passphrase and click "Generate." This will generate a password which will need to be used by any client connecting to your router.
Really hope this can be of help.

Kind regards
Andrea

Wired or wireless? Shut down the computer. Unplug the NetGear. Unplug the ISP modem, remove battery, if applicable, Check ALL cables and connections, reseat ALL connections. plug in the ISP modem, wait for selftest. Plug in the NetGear, wait for selftest. Reboot the computer. Try connecting with a Ethernet cable if you are trying to connect wirelessly to verify. If that fails, contact your ISP to verify signal comming in. Have a ISP tech come out to analyze the signal.

We are trying to secure our internet but are not sure which number to use off of the rouder when it asks for the pin #.

Your wireless card in her laptop needs to be configured with the router's wireless settings eg. the SSID and encryption key
The encryption key (pin or security key) is in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the laptop to connect to this wireless router.
The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

If you don't know the password, then you need to reset the router,
Hold it down the reset button with the help of a pen point and power cycle your router. Then re-do the configuration following the manufacturer's instructions. Then you can set password for your router.satheeshd_0.jpg

My router is not obtaining an ip address through WAN port. I use my rouders WAN MAC Address to identify my rouder to my ISP provider. I can see this MAc address under Internet Connection on the rouder...

Try using the MAC address of the ethernet adapter and clone it to your router. Your ISP might be recognizing the MAC address of the LAN card of the computer.

To get the mac address of the computer go to the command prompt and type ipconfig/all.

You may also need to contact your ISP to clear arp in their end, so that they will detect that you have a router. I hope this helps!

Linksys rouder suddenly stoped alowing other computers net access

I would recommend upgrading the router firmware, if you have not done this already.

Download the firmware file from the Linksys website:
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/

Typically, the upgrade is done by pointing your web browser at the IP address of the Linksys router. Linksys should provide specific instructions at the site above.
