You didn't say if you're running XP, Vista, or Windows 7, but there are utilities that can unlock the password for you. If you created an Admin account (as opposed to Administrator) and forgot that password, you may be able to boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 once per second during boot) and access the system's Administrator account to re-set the password. If that doesn't work, and you don't want to pay for the unlock utilities, I'd image the drive and re-install the OS. If you leave some space for a 2nd partition, you can restore (shrinking) the image to gain access to your files (this will not save your programs).

Lot of us used the usual procedure reinstalling OS or trying to recover OS instead. Unfortunately, this method will take a while and aside from that usually some of us misplaced or totally lost the start up disc.

However, I recently discovered a software program that will do the job for you and it's much easier than going through all the technical steps. Just head over to the Windows Geek site at: http://windowspasswordforgot.com and purchase their password removal program (works with Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista and 2003) for just $34.95. Save yourself the headache of fighting to get back into your computer! Their method is so much faster/easier, and works great! Just download the software, burn it to a CD, insert the CD into the problem computer and all the current passwords will be removed so you can get back in and get to work.
