I have a Mr Heater infra red propane wall heater. My problem is it turns itself off (pilot light) after running for an hour or two. I have no problem getting it turned back on but for some reason it d

Your pilot flame should be blue with a small yellow tip, and it should cover the thermocouple (a small rod in front of the pilot light). If the flame is too small and doesn't cover the thermocouple, it may be adjusted too low, or you have low gas pressure or you have a leak in your gas line coming in to the heater. If the flame looks like a lazy yellow flame, you are probably not getting enough air to the flame. Check that your air openings around the pilot are not clogged up. If the flame looks like a waving blue flame then you probably have excessive draft at the pilot. If the pilot flame looks good and covers the thermocouple, then the thermocouple might be bad. Best of luck. I hope I have helped.

Pilot won't stay on

Burners don't have anything to do with the problem of pilot not lighting. Is the problem that flame will not 'stay' lit? Or you can't even get a flame to ignite? If former: possible bad pilot generator or bad gas valve. If latter, possible bad gas valve or no fuel to ignite.

The pilot won't stay lit on gas hot water tank.

Make sure thermocouple tip is seated inside the burner flame.
Make sure thermocouple is not overtightened. Finger-tight + 1/4 turn.
If the pilot lights, then ECO energy cut off is not tripped, but gas control valve might be bad.
Check color of pilot flame: it should be strong and clear blue.
If pilot flame is weak, or color of flame is yellow-orange: Clean pilot orifice and burner and combustion parts on yearly basis.
Clean air intake screen if applicable.
Increase air supply to water heater. Open a window and see what happens.
Check for adequate draft going up chimney using match under vent hood to see if smoke drafts immediately upwards.
Bleed air out of gas line.
Check gas pressure.

When I press down and turn the know the pilot lights but as soon as you let up on the knob to turn it there is a click and the pilot light goes out.. This is on my Mr. Heater Big Buddy

When the pilot lights continue holding the button down for a full minute and then release. It should stay lit then to allow you to turn it to the on position. If the pilot will not stay lit after holding it for the full minute, then the thermocouple will need to be replaced.
Hope this helps.

I have a Mr Heater model MH9B ad have noticed a high pitched noise from the pilot. it is also spewing flaming droplets from the pilot so I dissasembled the heater and found an oily film on the pilot at the...

Those air inlet holes on the pilot is the Oxygen Depletion Sensor or ODS. If it's clogged, it won't allow the heater or the pilot to light. As far as the flaming droplets and the oily film are concerned, it sounds like a case of incomplete combustion, due to a dirty burner. Which doesn't allow the heater to burner cleanly and safely. Also, depending on whether you're using insert-able canisters of gas. They may be old cylinders and the gas is contaminated.

To help you to further troubleshoot the problem, I have included a link to your Owners Manual that you can download and print for future reference. Pay particular attention to page 6.

Pilot flame will not stay on

The thermocouple is bad this keeps the gas valve open from the pilot flame telling the gas valve that the pilot is lit and it is okay to turn on the burners.

Pilot lites; but, as soon as I turn on gas flame

sounds like your thermacouplar is going out and needs replaced. Sometimes these will act like they are working fine , but when the pilot stays on for awhile and later goes out it is a sure sign that it is bad

Cannot get my pilot to stay lit

Make sure the thermocoupler is about 1/4 in in the flame of pilot. If it persists, as you say it is, the thermocoupler is defefective. It's that bulb in the pilot flame. Good Luck, Ned
