The bulletin TDL-0078A-B for E3 error code states the software may need to be updated. So how do I know for sure if it is the Hall sensor or software version causing this problem?

  • tal257 Nov 17, 2009

So replacing the board will fix this problem or replacing the motor?

  • tal257 Nov 17, 2009

I did a resistance test on motor leads and got 11.3 ohms across each . The service manual states it should be 11.6 ohms. I guess this is close enough. So the motor seems fine. I did a service cycle and it passed. I have one more question. If the control board is the culprit , why did the software work fine for 4 years and now is causing machine to stop? Thanks.

Hi'

E3 Error: Machine control is attempting to drive the motor but is not seeing any tach response. Visual check shows motor is not moving. (Locked, Hall Sensor fault).

There is actually a service bulletin from Maytag on this very E3 error on your machine. There are a few possibilities as to the cause as outlined here. Please go through each of the items for troubleshooting on this bulletin. Make sure to check for loose connections to the motor as this may well be the cause of your error. If no loose connections are found E3 with diagnostic code 2E points towards a Hall sensor fault.

The new boards with updated software have serials starting with the numbers 16. So first check your serial number. If your board is below serial starting with 16 and you have followed the troubleshoot as per the bulletin - you will need to replace the board.

If your serial is below 16 it is most likely that the main board is at fault. This is the main board for your machine and it is an expensive item so you will need to make a decision on whether it is an economical repair or not. If there are no other issues from the wiring etc unfortunately this is the main possibility.

    Hi,

Unfortunately this is one of the drawbacks to washing machine technology. It often can happen even to a machine which has been rigorously tested pre-release with software which later shows itself up to cause problems over time. This is why Maytag released this bulletin over this very issue which was obviously rearing its head in common repair calls.

I know its not much consolation when your machine proceeds to act up like this after a few years of solid service. The difficulty is most likely in how the control board was set up by the software to read the tach response from the motor. This in turn can create strange or unpredictable spikes that may have an effect on the control board over time.

If I was in your position I would raise the issue with Maytag and see if they are willing to make any contribution. Make them aware that you know about this service bulletin which is dated June 2006 i.e not long after you bought your machine and insist that surely there must be some liability on their part if they are issuing such a thing as a bulletin.

I am well aware that they may not take you on in regard to this but my thinking is if you don't try you will never know. Stick to your guns and see if you can get anything from them that would take the sting out of the repair. Its certainly worth a shot and if they will not budge on it you have not lost anything.

You may also be interested in this recall information which although is to do with a seperate issue is extremely important for you to be aware of if your machine falls into these serial brackets. It may also help to strengthen your case.

Unfortunately these particular models do not have a good reputation for reliability and if you can get no satisfaction from Maytag I would be inclined to replace rather than repair.

Anyway I hope this helps somewhat and if so please do remember to rate and accept my answer. Many Thanks.

Maytag laundry neptune front loader washer MAH6700AWW. It is showing a E3 code error. what can we do for that

Hi, the E3 error means that the control board is detecting current going to the motor, but the motor won't turn properly. If the error code comes up all the time as soon as you press the power on button, then it means your control board is bad and reading incorrectly. If it only happens during a cycle, then you need a new motor unfortunately.

We are getting error code E3. What does this mean

Looks like you have either a stuck drum (does not spin) or an electrical fault that make the washer think the drum is not moving.

From a 2006 Technical Bulletin:

E3: Machine control is attempting to drive the motor but is not seeing any tach response. Visual Check shows motor is not moving. (Locked or Hall Sensor fault.)

Specifically, it could be:

1. Spin drum stuck – Verify that the spinner moves freely to eliminate this cause.
2. Hall Sensor (integral part of motor) fails or is loose – When the Hall Sensor fails or becomes dislodged, the control doesn't recognize that the motor is spinning and shuts down. The result will likely be an “E3” code in the worst case, or “SUdS” if it is only getting a partial rpm reading. Check wire harness connector(s) to motor.

Unless you are really overloading your machine you likely have an electrical fault, or a failure in the drive train--especially if the problem is intermittent. Probably time to call in a technician.
