Maxtor OneTouch III Not Recognized by XP

I have a Maxtor OneTouch III 300GB external HD that was working fine. I do not disconnect or turn off the external while it is in tx. I turned on the HD the other day and it wasn't detected by XP. I restarted the HD a few times and no luck...I even rebooted the computer a few times, and again without any luck. The HD is running and the light flashes when I plug and unplug it. It also had the same problem on another laptop. I decided to try to press the "OneTouch" button and the computer recognized it and it worked fine that day. The next day the same problem arose, but now it isn't even recognized in the device manager... The computer acts as though nothing is plugged into the USB port. Any suggestions besides throwing this Maxtor out of the window? It's too big for a paper weight... :P

    I just want the data.

you might be able to take the drive out of the Maxtor case and replace it in an enclosure and use it that Way, most external drives just use an ATA or SATA to USB or Ethernet Adapter

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300Gb can't recover data after a system restore

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.

Hope this helps.
