Black Vertical Lines 2" Thick On Both Sides.....What's Up????

I have a 4 year old Toshiba 27A33 and I have 2" black vertical lines on each side of the picture. This just stared happening. I know little/nothing about the repair aspect so I am wondering if maybe there is some setting I can adjust, but if not, how much it might cost to get it repaired. Not too happy this happened to such a new TV. Thanks for any guidance......

Re: Black Vertical Lines 2" Thick On Both...

There is a deflection problem that a shop can remedy. Expect to pay about 150 US for this repair...accordianman

Lines at top of screen, about 4"

This is due to vertical deflecton problem, there is some capacitors that has gone bad and need replacing. It might just be one cap rated at 100uf 35 volts. This is called vertical foldover eventually the top will fold over or you will get a 4" black border on the top of the scrn.

Television blank , but there is a white line across tube. I can hear audio

Your TV is in what is called "vertical collapse". About 70-80% of the time it is due simply to bad solder joints on the vertical output IC. You can verify this by tapping on the side or top of the TV, the picture may jump back into position. If it comes back it's as simple as re-soldering the vertical IC. If not, the vertical output IC may be shot or it may be missing one of it's supply voltages.
If the picture has been shrinking or had lines at the top that means there are some capacitors in the vertical circuit that were drying out. If it happened all of a sudden I'd bank on it being just bad solder.
Don't run it like that with that bright line for too long or it will burn in on the picture tube. Then if you do get it fixed you will see that line there all the time!

Distorted picture on my 32" Proscan TV...(about 15 years old)

The RCA GE sets have a problem with bad solder connections in the tuner unit which also causes numerous symptoms including poor regulation, no vertical deflection, low audio or dead set.

Pulling in from the sides is either poor regulation or a bad eeprom/solder join issue

Black horizontal lines across bottom 1/3 of screen

This is due to vertical section failure. Change the vertical supply rectifier diode and supply filters. Then check zener diode leakage in pumpup circuit section. Also check any electrolytic capacitors leakage in vertical section. If it is old model tv change vertical height, vertical lenearity presets also. I hope given details useful to you.
