HELP! Laptop screen has shrunk... black border on screen.

The desktop on my laptop - Dell Latitude D620 has shrunk. I have updated the resolution twice. Restarted the computer a dozen times. A black border about an inch remains on each side of the screen.

Big Lebowski - this refers to an issue with a laptop.
No CRT on a laptop.
It is more likely a driver issue.
Go to dell.com, look for support, put in your service tag & update the graphics drivers.

This may not actually be your computer but the monitor it self. If you have a friend with a monitor try theirs and see if the black box goes away. this is something that can and does happen with CRT aka Cathode ray tube monitors, when capacitors and parts start to malfunction and or start going bad.

"I downloaded the driver from Dell. It fixed the screen, but only temporarily. It started up perfectly. Then the screen shrunk itself again. "
Go back to the Dell website and get all the latest drivers (chipset, video, sound, network, the whole shebang!) for your particular machine.
Be sure that they extract to the proper directory (the default) If you have some but not all of the drivers, the conflict could cause this problem.

I have a dell latitude D620 that the screen look blurred, i change the resolution to the highest but still blurred.

Hi,

It is unfortunate that the LCD screen has blurred. There is a possibility that the LCD screen has failed. You may want to use the below link and performing an LCD BIST:

Also try connecting a known good external monitor and check if that helps.

Thanks and Regards.

Dell Latitude D620, Black Screen/Power On

It is the backlight! That laptop uses a fluorescent lamp. It is bad.
If you look carefully at the screen, you will see the Windows desktop (or whatebver you are running). It just needs to be lit up.... from the back. Tel them to replace the LCd screen or replace the lamp.

Hope this helps!

Screen resolution change = black border around small screen

Once you change the resolution to a smaller size and you see the black border, go into the monitor's menu and there should be settings for the Horizontal and Vertical size/position. Adjust those until it looks correct.

I hope this helps :)

Dell latitude problem!!!!!

The cable connecting the motherboard to the screen might have a few open wire. It's why the problem occur when you move the lid.
download the service manual to have access to this cable (HERE: : http://www.elhvb.com/mobokive/edwin/laptops/Dell/LATITUDE/C510-610/C510-610.PDF)
Unwrap very gently the cable from is sticky tape and you should find a dozen of very small wire, one or two might need to be reconnected together.
Or You might also have a problem with the VGA card, in that case your only chance is to find a replacement one on ebay, or if the VGA card is integrated to the motherboard, then....live with it.
You should find all the details on the service manual.
Good luck tell me if it did solve anything, and please rate..
cheers

Blank Laptop Screen

Either the LCD inverter or the LCD or, at the very least, the backlight in the LCD, is faulty. You will need to replace either your LCD inverter or the screen itself.

C840 resolution difficulties...

The type of screen you have is a UXGA screen. the optimal resolution for that is 1600 x 1200. changing the resolution for that will distort the screen causing black borders. If a computer has a 15.0+" SXGA+ screen with an optimized resolution of 1400x1050 and the screen's current resolution is set to 1280x1024 pixels, the display will shrink resulting in a black border surrounding the edges of the screen. Also, all other lower resolutions may be stretched to fit the screen. No border will be visible, but fonts may appear slightly fuzzy.
