It isn't the game, its for everything. Whether a game is in it or not. My DS lite won't go into standby with over 24 games, with my N5, or without anything in it. ;(

Thank you! I removed the speakers and only use the headphone jack! Now it all makes sense!

You do have the right speaker.

Right speaker initiates the standby mode, if its not there it will not go into standby. Try putting some small magnet near the abxy buttons while it is still open, it should go into standby.

It might just be the game. Some games don't really go into a stand-by mode.

Hi,
If you yourself have replace it, I think you damage the upper LCD ribbon connector. I have repaired a lot of DS, a broken hinge usually the cause of that problem( ribbon connector cut off ).
Check the upper LCD if that model have a seperate ribbon connector, luckily you could buy the ribbon only, if not, BAD LUCK, you have to buy a new upper LCD.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for asking FixYa!

My DS Lite refuses to go into standby mode. It's the same with every game I try, and I've done nothing out of the ordinary that might have caused this sudden problem -- no new casing, no new games, haven't...

it could be the wireless sencer in the top part of the ds at fault as the ds closes and moves it closer the ds should go into standbye, my thought is that the wire has been shorted somewhere probably inside the hinge.

Broken in half got new shell don't know how to put together

much of it is pretty straight forward, the only hard part is putting the ribbon cable thru the hinge for the top screen, without ripping it, best thing to say is put the ribbon cable in first, then the wifi and mic cables (black and white), rest is pretty straightforward.

Power button loosely slides

Yes. The switch has broken and is replaceable. However I wouldn't recommend you do it unless you've done this before. DS Lites are easy to damage further when taking them apart. It's a great system but is easily broken beyond fixing. Look at all the posts on here from people putting new shells on and now the system won't boot up, broken ribbon cable connectors, etc. If it's under a year old contact Nintendo and they will repair it for free.
