My Dell xps 400 will not boot up completely, then won't power off

My Dell xps 400 will not boot up completely. It keeps starting, stopping and restarting, then it will not turn off unless i unplug it or turn off the surge protector. There is a green light on inside the tower and the fan is spinning as it attempts to start.

It sounds like the machine is experiencing hardware problems. You will either need to call Dell or take it into a local computer repair place.

Please if possible come back to the question here and rate it 4 thumbs. It looks like the answer helped you, but for some reason it doesn't rate it 4 thumbs unless you come back a second time and specify 4 out of 4 thumbs. I hope you will do this for me. Thanks Tim

Dell xps wont boot from dvd just cd

Sounds like you have only a CD drive. To boot DVDs you need to have a DVD drive installed. The computer probably came with a CD drive because Win XP came on a CD.

What is the absolute best video card I could use in my Dell XPS 400, Pentium D3.0GHz Processor with 4GB of RAM?

Your limitations will be
1. Your power supply, as it's only a 375W you have to be aware of power consumption.
2. Your budget, This will decide what you can afford.

Also you need to see what the recommendations are for you applications you want to run. Keep in mind that with your system the CPU will be the limiting factor, there's no point spending lots and lots on a card that won't be able to operate to it's maximum potential.

Led light is solid on my dell xps 400 and system wont start? any ideas?

Can you be more specific when you say the system won't start?

If the system does not turn on at all or turns on for a second and then shuts off it is very likely due to a power failure. If you have installed any new harware recently unplug it and try to start the system again. If problem persists it is likely faulty power supply which a fairly cheap fix.

The XPS/Demension 400 desktop is having issues booting, it gets directly past the Dell loading screen then freezes. There are no numbers that show up on the face and if I press Control/Alt/Delete it goes...

First unplug all the connections from the pc. No cable at should be connected on the back. Keep pressing the power button for a minute completely without leaving it. Connect only the necessary cables which is power , keyboard and mouse ....nothing else.
Try if this works.....if no please reply for furthur help
Thanks!!!

My Dell XPS 400 PC will not Boot up past the "System password"

Both the system password and the BIOS password are set in the BIOS CMOS. You need to clear the CMOS.

The online Dell service manual for the XPS 400 provides a clear and detailed procedure for clearing the CMOS. It's just a matter of moving some jumpers around:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps400/sm/index.htm

If you are not used to working inside computers, start with "Removing the computer cover", then go to "System Setup" and click on "Clearing Forgotten Passwords".

Another method is to unplug the power cord and remove the CMOS battery for a 1/2 hour or so. For details on how to do that, try this website:
