When this happens, it's because the volume button on the inside is messed up. Usually it's because it's dirty or sticky and sticks down [or presses itself]. You can try opening it and cleaning under the volume button. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the home/volume/start/select circuit ribbon cable. If you're not comfortable opening it, check the following company -- they would repair something like this for $29

I think your volume button is broken because I had a similar problem with my psp My WiFi switch wont work when I had it checked the switch was detached from the command it was assigned to

once you try to upgrade and fail, then there is no way to get it back, its called bricking, meaning the PSP is as good as a brick. Here is the site that explains it more in detail so that way you'll have the info for the future.
