Clean the contacts on the body and the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened in rubbing alcohol. See if that makes a difference.

Nikon d40 monitor is black when camera is on

Does the menu show when you press the MENU button? Can you see your pictures when you press the Playback button (right-pointing triangle)? If so, then there's nothing to fix.
The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. There's a viewfinder which allows you to frame and compose your picture. The LCD monitor is for menus, camera settings, and picture review. LiveView, which allows you to use the monitor for shooting, is a recent development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, both introduced years after the D40.

Nikon D40 taking blank/black pictures after I wiped my lens.

Try removing the lens and re-fix it.. Some times the lens is not sensed properly if it is not fixed right.

Ive got the nikon d40. when i take photos close up they are blurred. there r 2 settings on the focus lense one is letter a one letter m. you have to move switch to indicate one or other. camara wont take...

The letters you're referencing is the M/A (manual / auto) focus switch. The lens has this switch and operates in Auto Focus mode when set to "A" and manual focus mode when set to "M".

You have to manually focus on the subject when in letter "M". If you do not, the result will be out of focus. From your description, it sounds like the camera / lens combination is attempting to focus and operate the shutter in auto, and focusing in manual; but due to some type of damage resulting from possible mishandling, exposure to dust, dirt or even moisture is interfering with the successful completion of the process.

You could isolate the problem to determine if the cause is in the lens or camera by simply attaching the lens to another compatible Nikon camera or placing a different auto-focus lens on your D40. The problem will either stay with your D40 or follow the lens when attached to a different camera. It is also *possible* that due to numerous attempts of auto-focusing with your D40 & lens combination, that both the lens *and* the camera have been damaged. If the problem is severe enough, the problem in the failed device could cause failure in the otherwise normally working device, too.

You might be best served by contacting Nikon Service & Support below:

You also said you lost your manual. You can download the manual for the D40 directly from Nikon in your choice of English, French or Spanish from the link below:

Good luck!

How do I get my nikon d40 to take Black white pictures?

You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.

Nikon D40 shutter speed problem

The D40 will not take great photos of an indoor event without blurring or noise. You need a fast lens and a high ISO using the popup flash or on camera flash would be ideal but some of these events you can not use flash. All these images I shot with a Nikon D40. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?src=fftb#/pages/Keller-TX/Raving-Design/78762448229?v=photos&ref=ts Learn to use the camera for ur events. Experiment it's all about trial and error. Ray

I'm currently having the same problem. :[

You might want to check and make sure your lens in on the "A" setting and not "M". This can be found on the side of your lens.

Nikon D40 help?!

I assume the lens had the impact. The 18-55 lens has the built-in motors for auto-focus.
Try switching to manual focus (on the lens). If this works, the lens may not auto-focus anymore.
Try it and let me know.
cheers,

Old Lense and new camera

Here is a link to the lens limitations of the D40, same for the D40X:
http://www.popphoto.com/photonews/3543/update-to-nikon-d40-hands-on.html

The camera will not recognize the lens but you can take pictures setting speed and aperture manually. Since you see results after you take the picture, you can make adjustments to correct your exposure
