I have the same problem but I want to print in all colors. I purchased a new cyan ink tank. Installed it and it STILL tells me cyan almost empty. I have turned, off, disconnected, cleaned all ink colors, taken out re-installed.....

I have changed all cartridge, I have never used anything other than brother, its the first time I've had to replace, I don't use it often. It still says no cartridge cyan. I've updated software, removed all put back in did not touch the heads. I do not understand how to resolve, It will not do a cleaning cycle.

replaced all the colors, yet the message is saying reinstall the cyan. what is it and where do I find it on the printer? please rush! thanks

Yes, if you dont need the color anymore in future:

You can cheat with empty c/y/m carts by sticking some dark but very thin adhesive tape around the nose (see picture).

After that the printer logic expects the c/y/m carts always as full.

But you cant print any colors within the next 2 weeks anymore because air will dry out the print head (and destroy the color nozzels)!

See brother homepage for instructions on how to print in grayscale only!

I've created an hole (about 0.4cm wide) in the side of the cartridge and put some dark green liquid (detergent) in it. After that I closed off the hole with tape and put it back in to the printer, which recognized the cartridge as being full.
It is a very drastic measure... only recommended if you really feel urged to print some grayscale text or something like that. Before you start printing with colors again you should change your 'artificial'-cartridges.
I don't know if this solution can cause harm to your printer. I have done this experiment with a MFC-215C printer (brother). I am not responsible for any damage caused by this method.

Good Luck!

Something that has worked for some Brother owners to get cartridges recognised.

1. With your MFC powered up, open it up and remove the cartridge you are having a problem with, then close the MFC, leaving it powered up. It should report that there is no cartridge in the machine.

Still with the MFC powered up, open it up and reinsert the ink cartridge, then close the MFC. It should either ask if you have replaced a cartridge or go into its cleaning mode.

Answer "yes" to "have you replaced cartridge?" and it should either "print" or "clean" and then "print".

Want to change it to black and white printing only.

A manual for your fax is available here, and will show you how to set your fax to monochrome mode.

I changed the ink cartridge the black one but it still says cartridge empty I unplugged it and it still sais the same thing

My MFC-420CN acts up occationally. Remove the new cartridge, hold it as you would to install it, Rotate it to the right about 45°. Snap it with the back of a finger (dislodges any air bubbles in ink feed). Reinstall cartridge (ensure it is fully seated. This works for both Brother cartridges and the eforcity cartridges I've been using for the past couple of years. HTH

I don't use the color printing yet the color cartridges are empty

It's all a scam. I have the same problem and I called Brother and they told me that the machine uses color ink to clean itself. It costs more to replace these color cartridges then to buy a new one, which is what I'm going to do. Buy a black and white from a different company. It's all a scam to get you to spend money on their color ink that you don't use.

I Need to Print

Sadly in a word, 'No'.

Here is the exact answer from Brother:

Your Brother machine is designed to stop ALL printing operations
(printing from the pc, printing received faxes and printing copies or reports) when any of the ink cartridges are empty. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suction air from the dry cartridge and damage the printhead. Even if you print in black only or change the print settings to MONO or GRAYSCALE to avoid printing in color, the programmed cleaning cycles would still suction the dry cartridge, because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles.

The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge or cartridges.

While memory is available, black and white faxes will continue to be received into memory. If a color fax is being received, the Brother machines HANDSHAKE will request the fax be sent as black and white fax.

All faxes received into memory will automatically print once the ink cartridge is replaced.

NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic ink or refill their Brother ink cartridges. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges.

My brother fax machine is indicating that two color cartridges are almost empty, however i never print anything and color, and basically everything is black. so how can they be almost empty?

Three reasons -

If your print driver is set to color. It will use all the colors to make black.

Because the machine is ink jet it needs to clean the print head to stop it from drying out. It will use color ink to flush the print head every two days.

When ever in receives a fax it will use some color when printing a fax, particularly Cyan.

If you only wish to print or receive faxes in black there is now a version of Brother fax that only uses black ink and has no color inks. However it may not be available in your region. If you try and cheat the system you will only kill your print head.

Printer not printing

Unfortunately, like most multi cartridge ink jet printers when one ink is empty the printer will cease printing regardless of whether you just want to print in black and white and you have plenty of black ink left. I have heard of people tricking the printer into believing the cartridge is full by placing coloured tape etc in front of the ink sensing device but I am not sure how the Brother senses the ink levels as i have some aftermarket ink cartridges for mine which seem to be completely non-opaque (unlike the originals). The need to have colour cartridges in even if you only ever print with black ink is good news for Brother as the MFC-210c uses a large amount of ink during it's routine cleaning cycles (that you cant stop) and will empty all 3 cartridges in under 6 months without ever printer a single drop of colour ink. Sorry about all the bad news, at least your not alone......
