the power shuts down or did the PC BSOD?
Blue screens of Deathh(sic)
BSODs are crashes, turning off is the PC turning its own power off.
blue screens of *****.
no OS stated, my guess XP? that loves to crash OS.
the chkdsk way is ok, it finds simple problems, only !!!
it does not really test the hdd robustly, nor do a smart analysis.
the tests on hdd are best done with linux boot cd/dvd or usb thrumb drive, (after chkdsk)
chkdsk from a OS running can hard to do if it BSODs all the time.!
we can also use F11 recover mode and do cmd, prompt there
and try that, chkdsk.
or from install disks, of you unstated OS. run Chkdsk
but best is this. be sure to check SMART 05 and C6 numbers

did you know as you type on this forum the severs here
actually check that S.M.A.R.T data page like 1 time every 10 min?
and when it sees that fail' it turns on a red light and tells the tech
to hot swap in a new drive.? (or emails him?)
the same technology works here, even W10 does this better.
it will tell you (in lame why) the HDD is going SOUTH.
if the PC can run for say 10 minutes and nOT BSOD crash
then run Crystal disk , (free)
as seen in the link above.
your PC has and F11 key, called recovery and has and advanced page. below is w10 , what OS do you run: we cant guess OS
