Dvd burner I have an Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop with a built in phillips SDVD+rw burner. I can't get it to burn a dvd. It did work but when they came out with the new speed dvd+rw's it stopped working. Do I need an upgrade and where do I get it? Also what brand dvd's are compatible? Thanks

Check Dells website and see if there is a new driver avaible or newer firmware, all brands of media should be compatible, and you shouldnt have to upgrade.

My cd drive will read cds but wont read as a burner

Not all Inspirons have CD burners (the 4 factory options were CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, and DVD/CD-RW. You can confirm that via Windows Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what model drive you have, then just Google it to see what it's capable of.

In case you have either a CD-RW type drive or a DVD/ CD-RW drive and it doesn't want to burn CD's , then it's a bad drive.

Have a dell inspiron cd-rw/dvd drive combo but it does not burn dvd only cd

Your drive is not a DVD burner. The way you can tell is that it is called a CD-RW/DVD drive, not a CD-RW/DVD-RW drive.

My burner will not burn cd's anymore. It still plays cd's fine as well as play and burn dvd's fine. I see no errors in hardware setup. It is a nec dvd +- RW ND 6650A that came with my Dell Inspiron E1705.

The CD Burner / Player / DVD Burner are all different heads. If the Dell Inspiron E1705 is an older model it is most likely you have reached the end of it's usable life for the CD burner part. If it is new the CD burner is most likely defective and hopefully warrantied. Otherwise these CD/DVD units can be replaced relatively inexpensively (as compared to buying a new laptop).

My dell d610 laptop has dvd/cd rw i want to know if this means i have dvd rw too if not what should i buy so that i will have dvd rw hopefully it will be something i just plug in this is my first computer...

Your built in CD Drive is a DVD player and regular CDR - CDRW burner, this means you cannot burn DVD's. To burn DVD's I would recommend you purchase an external DVD burner, here are some links to ones that are compatable to your computer.

Asus - Good Reviews

LITEON - Also has good Reviews

I have Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. I want ot replace the CD-RW/DVD with a CD burner. What should I be looking for or is it better to go with an external DVD burner?

Well a CD-RW/DVD ROM is a CD burner so you really dont need to replace it. Unless you meant replace it with a DVD burner then...

The best thing you can do is go to the Dell website and search your notebook/model number and look for the upgrade drive and buy it from them. If its to expensive search ebay or the web with the info you found on the Dell website (combo drive name + model number) and find one for a cheaper price.

DVD BURNER

Well, either your system doesn't notice the drive in the device manager or your drive is bad, look in the control panel under system/hardware to see if it sees the drive, if it does, remove the drive and reboot, let windows reinstall it, if that doesn't work you may need a new drive. Here's one I found on ebay cheap.

Burn DVD

Read on your optical drive. If it burns CD's it reads CD-RW. In order to burn DVD's it needs ro read DVD-RW. If it reads DVD-ROM it will only read DVD's not burn them.

A good external burner is Plextor. You can get one at Walmart, or you can check Ebay and find an internal to replace the one in your machine. They are fairly easy to replace, and you won't have a bulky external to carry around.
