Problems connecting to the internet on new computer

Just bought a new Dell computer. We had DSL with our old computer and it worked fine. It has Windows XP. Our new computer has Windows Vista. We get an error message saying that a cable is not plugged in but all cables are. I called our ISP, but they were no help. My son says it has something to do with Windows Vista. Does anyone have any ideas?

    The computer is brand new.

Thanks for your reply. I went on the Dell website and found the section about the drivers. I see that they can be downloaded. HOWEVER, I was using my old computer because my problem is that I cannot connect to the internet on the Dell. How can I download them then?

Is this a brand-new, out-of-the-box computer? Or was this recently formatted?

Hi,

There are a problem with LAN connectivity.First you have to install the LAN driver compatible with VISTA not for XP.After that you have to call to ISP provider to re-configure your system on LAN .

If its a matter of missing drivers or incompatible drivers, you'll need to go to the computer manufacturer's website, in this case DELL, and find the drivers according to the 7-digit service tag found on the back of your computer.
This is an example of the different service tags on each computer.

If you or your son have a flash drive, you can download the drivers and save it onto that flash drive, and transfer it to the DELL without the internet, and just double-click the file you downloaded.

You must hook these particular items up in a specific sequence. First power down both the modem and the router, only connect the modem to the isp until all appropriate lights on on. Next plug cat 5 to router where it is labeled internet or wan if neither label then to #1. until alights come up on router. Hope this helps.

Maybe the laptop is configured by default to look for a wireless signal through its wifi drivers, or a different previously installed modem. Go to your Computer/Control Panel/Network Sharing Center and set up a new connection there so your computer knows what to do.

Cannot connect to my DSL line with Dell Dimension 8200

If the card is installed properly you should see it in device manager and not have a yellow question mark next to it. It should also say in device manager whether the device is working properly or not and is there any light flashing on the network card trying to connect. Possibly you may need to get updated drivers off the internet from another computer and transfer to that PC. If this is all too much headache i just recently bought a new Realtek network card from MSY for $9 so its not the end of the world....cheers from Scott

Router won't connect me to internet

both the dsl box and the router must be configured to work with each other.

ask your internet service provider on how to turn the dsl box into a regular modem as most are hybrid modem-routers.

Probably your network is secured so you will need to configure connection (provide WEP or WPA passkey to connect).
Double click on wireless network name you wish to connect and put encryption key

I got a Dell desktop computer from a friend who bought it new. It only has a dial up connection so I got it hooked up. Problem that I have is it won't dial out to connect to the internet. Ralphie

Hi dlwbaw

You have to make a new connection.
Go to "Control Panel", find "Network Connections", double click on that, here you choose file (in the menu) and choose "New Connection". Follow the Wizard (choose, new connection to the internet, connection without code/username/password, and normaly people have DSL connections).
Try to connect the pc to the internet now, this should work, if not:
you have to have the setup way from your internet provider, many times they have a manual on the internet. If it is a connection with user name/ code, you have to Edit your friends internet connection (icon on network connections) or make a new connection with this codes.
The codes you get from your internet provider

Some internet providers allow only one computer connected to the internet.

Hope that helps
Have a nice Sunday :O)

Cannot connect to the internet

open internet explorer, go to tools, internet options, then the connections tab and make sure ' never dial a connection' is ticked, assuming you had a dial up connection before using the router on this pc or if you briefly used it.

New computer running slow

if you are using dial up, you shud not have a modem.. modem is just for DSL connection
if you have a modem probably you are using a DSL connection

DEFINITION:
dial up - connection using a phone line with internet connection; cannot use fone while on internet

DSL/modem- connection using a modem plugged in with computer and fone line; able to use fone even when on internet.
