You could reinstall the pc from scratch but make sure you save all your personal stuff or possibly find the touch pad drivers. Try using the service code on the back of the laptop...

old relic COMPAQ LT.

your LT now has 2 mice, and if you run 2 mice what happens
they try to get in a fight.
we must shut off the mouse pad first.
I guess this mouse is a MS mouse, no mouse name stated.

I shut off the mouse pad in device manager.
look for the USB mouse not, is this unstated mouse wireless, if yes a new battery is now needed. and matching usb dongle.
now plug in the mouse. PC goes DING donng.,
and it loads a driver
be in the internet to W7 can find the driver.
if still dead, go to device manager,
see that mouse there under. mice and other pointing devices
mine shows, HID mouse here.
if missing , plug the mouse into all USB ports 1 by one and listen for the DINGDONGg (means new USB device discovered)
if still fails buy a new mouse, gee barrow one for a day.
if that mouse works , trash the dead one.

you can not have 2 mice at same time or you get into trouble.
the old mouse pad , we had to use disable in device manager to kill it.
on the new HP we have newer driver and it has this.

Mouse pad just stopped working on start-up today. Works with external mouse. Pad and left & right buttons just dead.

You may have turned it off. Check your "function" or "f" keys or the on/off button may be above the touch pad

is bad, dead, and the do not want the built in device working,
your unnamed MOUSE is bad. right.
ALPS tells us nothing. (is it a GP-410UB " wild guess.
is it USB mouse or PS2? what model mouse? the number.
what OS are you running, we can not guess this... and matters. big time.
there are 2 issues on notebooks, zv5000

1: SHUTTING OFF THE INTERNAL ,POINTING DEVICE(S)
do that in device manager, click unwanted device
and click (right) PICK DISABLE .
it now dead this internal, pointing device.

2nd: option to is click Mouse (CP) and then pick the internal
laptop , mouse, and find a tab there called.
what to do with 2 mice, (on mine it has , USB mouse shuts off internal mouse, not all can do this, my HP8540 you can't but the maker of the notebook pad had and upgrade from this pad, and now has this feature,)
ymmv, your mouse may vary.

2: The mouse external. what ALPS, is it USB or PS2
finding drivers for very old mice can be hard,
did you have internet connections when you plugged in this mouse? if yes, it will attempt to find a driver automatically (PnP magic)

Im running Vista OS.
My glidepoint model, GP-410UB does not work right.
help.

the Control panel. 101
has a mouse icon
and a device manager icon

Go to HP support and download the right driver for you synaptics mouse pad.

Note, use a USB mouse til you get it going again.

Use restore to a previous time when the synaptics pad worked.

I had a similar problem and ended up doing a total system restore.

Sometimes it takes drastic action to fix a drastic problem.

Make sure you back up all your files!!

Cheers.

How do i take it apart ? Are there hidden screws to be found?

There are a total four small phillips screws on the base of the mouse. Two are in the battery compartment, while the remaining two screws are located beneath two self-adhesive teflon pads at the front of the mouse. Simply remove these pads with a small flat screwdirver or scraper in order to reveal the screws underneath.
