Question about Acer Aspire 5630 Notebook
Have a problem with a new Aspire 5630 with Vista home premium. The screen momentarily goes blank at seemingly random times, but the condition does not last for more than a second. Have sent it back under warranty twice. The first time, Acer replaced the hard drive claiming the original had defects. The second time, they claim they could not replicate the problem, and sent it back to me. Since the problem still persists, any idea what's going on?
It could be power management. Many laptops are set to turn off the screen after relatively short periods of inactivity, to save battery power. You can manage your power settings in Vista like this:
Click on Start, then Control Panel.
Click on System and Maintenance
Click on Power Options
From here you have 3 choices - Balanced, Power Saver and High Performance. If it's on Power Saver, I'd say that's probably your culprit. To test it, put it on High Performance and see if that helps. But don't leave it there unless you don't use it for very long between charging, or you regularly operate it in a docking station or with a power cord.
If Power Saver isn't working for you, Balanced is probably the best bet, long term. Or, you can click on Change Plan Settings under any of those options to further customize them.
If it turns out that power saving isn't the problem, it could also be a loose cable between your screen and the motherboard. I think that's unlikely, however, as Acer would not have replaced a hard drive for that, and should have been able to reproduce it.
If power saving doesn't help, let me know and I'll look into other possible causes.

When this happens are you doing anything specific (using some software or anything physical like touching a certain part of the laptop)?
