Question about Rinnai Desa Vent-Free Infrared Gas Heater: Vent-Free Infrared Gas Heater(18,000 BTU)

1 Answer

Pilot light goes out when I turn the the dial to "On"

I have a ventless Vermont Castings LP burner - the pilot light goes out when you turn the knob to "On" (otherwise it will burn all day) - sounds like it could be a faulty thermocouple. I was told by the supplier that with a ventless unit you are not permitted to replace the thermocouple only but must replace the whole burner assembly lwhich I imagine to be much more espensive - does this sound right??

There could be several issues here. First is the pilot is weak. You may have something clogging the pilot oriface, or it could be turned down too low. Second is the thermocouple could be bad. And last, the main control valve could be bad. There are some tests that can tell you which of the last two may be your issue but they generally require a qualified tech.

Unit goes under sure heat name also.
My unit emitted unburnt gas smell the minute pilot started,
and was annoying during burner operation.
I discovered they built unit with primary pilot that had 2 ports.
They used LP and sealed off natural gas, instead turning lp/nat
knob on back activates second pilot for natural gas use.
This means natural gas goes thru LP pilot orifice and burns
slightly off during normal natural gas use(by design).
The unused natural gas orifice has 1 air mix hole and the LP orifice
has 2 air mix holes.
I carefully plugged 1 of the holes in the LP orifice and suddenly
pilot gas flame seated correctly on orifice port.Gone was the
unburnt odor of natural gas.
The typical flame in a flame appearance now was exhibited by
the small pilot, secondary pilot remained consistent with manual
picture.
Of course, to use with LP I would have to open blocked air mix
hole in addition to the other changes per manual.
Hope this helps someone with similar condition.

Pilot light has gone out how do i relight it?

Hi .. look at the control valve on the burner .,. there is a knob you can turn. It has markings for pilot and run, or something like that. turn the knob to pilot and push and hold it in. Light the pilot wit a long fireplace match. After the pilot is lit, wait about half a minute and relese the knob,, the lp[ilot should stay lit.

Ventless gas wall heater. Pilot lights but wont stay lit.

The thermocouple may be worn out.
The thermocouple may have come loose from the valve.
The ODS pilot may be clogged with dust or lint and may need to be cleaned with air(less than 30psi)
The valve or regulator may be faulty.
