Question about Proscan PS60690 60" Rear Projection Television

TV Won't Turn On

Model # PS60690 Chasis # PTK188AC.
When I press the power button the green light flashes on and off 3 times. While doing this I get a bright flash for the left projector (facing front screen) area while at the same time, 3 high pitch squeal sounds. There is no response from the other projectors and this is visable due to front and rear panels being removed during inspection. I live in Ontario Canada and am the original owner.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I found this procedure on another forum and tired it and I got sound, no picture but the TV never turned off. I believe it may be the HV Splitter as suggested in the section below. Does anyone have the proper procedure to re & re an HV Splitter.

"The most likely (and most documented) answer is your HV splitter. A quick test is to remove the anode from your hv flyback (not your hv splitter... arcs like Maxwell said it would). Remeber to unplug your TV and give it a day or two to discharge the caps (this is not a guarantee that they are discharged since charge can be present up to a year without resistively bleeding them off (soft crowbaring) This hv flyback transformer is located in your rca just inside the ctc171 or ctc170 wooden crate. You can easily get to it by removing the back panel. It looks like an oil filter with screws (if that helps) with a big red wire attached to it (that's the HV anode). Pull the red wire out, unlocking the holding tab with a straight blade screw driver. Duct tape it and keep it away from anything conducting (preferrably isolate it with a medium such as a toilet paper cardboard insert). Now, there should be a rubber grommet slipped over the wire (if it's not visible, reinsert the wire a little ways to try and retrieve it... you need the grommet on the wire when you put it back. With all this said, plug in your tv and push the power button. if power return and sound is heard from the speakers, then you need to replace your HV splitter. Run a search on hv splitter RCA 213986. This is for the ps60682, but another one I found is the RCA 205064."

I too have a proscan PS60690 chassis PTK188AC with the exact same problem as My Dream ...... right down to the light on the front panel flashing three times ..... oh and what a coincidence ..... I too live in Ontario ( Belle River ). I haven't tried to do anything to it other than vacuum the inside of the back cabinet. Is this something that I can fix myself or do I have to pay a technician only to find out that it isn't worth the cost? The build date on the tv is Oct. 1995. It has been a great unit with this being the first bit of trouble I've ever had from it and I bought it brand new from the Future Shop.

Hi pjoyal1, I've read in several posts to replace the HV Splitter with an original not the generic since the generic doesn't last very long. Due to the higher cost of parts in Ontario, I'm going to order one on-line and await delivery. In the mean time l"ll keep searching for the proper way to replace it.

Have you tried the test in quotes yet?

If you can wait, I'll post back once I have the part and replaced it. Keep in mind delivery from the US takes some time especially if it's been held up at the boarder.

I got a quote to have someone to repair it and they told me it's $80.00 for a service call and based what I told them approximately $450.00 for the repair including service call.

As you can see, nobody has responded to my original problem so were on our own.

Item is HV Splitter # 205064, do not purchase a generic, they last between 1 to 4 year and are more difficult to replace, purchase the original RCA unit. Cost Canadian is approximately $140.00 plus tax, I've seen them online from $38.00 to $80.00 for the RCA original see web site for item and picture of unit.

    http://www.tristatemodule.com/html/flyba...

Before you try to locate the HV Splitter please unplug the TV since the HV Splitter contains more then 33,000 volts and do not touch the inside of tv, if you do not understand this warning stop imediatly and don't procedure further. Even after the TV has been unplugged there is still residual voltage held in the HV Splitter.

Remove the bottom front panel of the base which is cliped into place. Once panel is removed you will see a small black panel with little holes in it which is called a convergence panel, unscrew this panel and set aside. Once this panel is out of the way, you will now see the 3 projectors, look in between the left and middle projector towards the top of the opening, if you look at the picture of the HV Splitter for reference in the link provided you will see the HV Splitter screwed upside down with 4 red wired going to it the size of a coaxial cable. At this point don't touch any wires until all voltage is gone which usually takes a couple of day.

    Hope this helps.

Both pjoyal1 and I have them on order from the US since it's cheaper there. Yes we're from Canada. It should be in by the end of this week early next week, we'll keep you posted.

I finally got around to installting the RCA Original HV Splitter #205064. I found that one of the Rubber Gaskets was missing from the Anode lead wires and another (focus lead rubber gasket) fell into the cavity of tv which I can't locate. Either way, I completed the instalation and turned the TV on. I have picture and sound now but there is a problem with the picture quality. There are horizontal lines going across the top and bottom of the screen, which makes the screen somewhat skewed. The volume desplay is set to low and a bit blurred also. If there is a way that I can post a picture of the screen on this forum please advice since a picture holds a thousand words. I'm not sure whether it's related to the lead or focus wire instalation or some sort of adjustment. If someone has some suggestions please feel free to post them.

    Thanks

  • Frank Frank Jan 25, 2008

I corrected the picture quality now and the only problem left is the bottom of the screen is to low. When the volume display shows up at the bottom of the screen it's now showing the whole display, therefore I'm hoping it's just an adjustment. I don't know where the adjustment is for this setting.

  • Frank Frank Jan 28, 2008

All problems have been repaired as of Jan, 28th. The rest were just adjustments that I had to make, but it took me many hours of searching to find the correct way to adjust it.

Hope you all repair yours as well, good luck everyone.

I also have the prodacn ps60690. I think my problem is a little different but here goes.

The other night the picture went blank. I waited a little while and turned it back on, the LED on the power button acted the same as my dream blinking three times and then turning off. I waited about an hour and tried it again. The picture turned on an about four to five minutes the picture turn off and in about a minute later the picture turned back on. I let this do this for a few times. Following the instructsion to disconnect the HV splitter I tried this. I turned on the power and the proscan turned on and at that time i still didn't have any sound, but I was hearing crackling inside the unit. It was definitly not sizzling. The cracking stopped and about four to five minutes the same thing was happening again. The unit would turn on and then off and back on again. I turned it off waited a few minutes and tried it again. The LED blinked three times and the unit shut off.

Do I try replacing the HV splitter? Or do you think it is something else?

Hi Again. I will be trying to locate the part and do the test. Thanks for the info and keep me posted as to what you come up with and I will do the same.
    Thanks again.

Hello My Dream, I haven't tried the test because I haven't located the part. The description is a little too vague for me. Can you shed some light on where it is and what you have to remove to get at it? If I had the part or a picture of the part right in front of me I could figure out what to do to change it I think. Would you happen to have the part number and a place that the part could be ordered from? It seems as though that is the likeliest place to start ( changing the HV splitter ). I was afraid that the pricing for a potential fix that you have obtained would be true. This big old girl has been a big part of our entertainment world and we really hate to toss it. Can't afford one of those fancy hang on the wall units ( I mean once you've had 60" it's hard to go smaller )so I will wait until I hear from you again. If you'd care to email me the part number my email address is pjoyal2@sympatico.ca. Thanks for your correspondence as I CAN see that we are pretty much alone with this problem.

I was wondering what the black and red wires coming from the oppisite side of the 4 coax size wires do? I have bought a new hv splitter part number 205064 for my tv but I'm not sure on how to install it, if any one has a diagram or a picture that would be great.

Thank you My Dream. I did what you told me to do and it worked. My Proscan is now up and running. It was the High Voltage splitter as you told me. For anyone else who might need to change theirs Pay Attention For The Little grommets or rubber gaskets that are around each of the wires. They will sometimes fall out on their own and you will be hard pressed to find them once they fall inside the cabinet.

Sony Bravia KDL-55EX500 flashing green and yellow light, an won't turn on. Any suggestions?

you guys are going to love me. lol. i figured it out at least for mine. $ )
1.start by unplugging the tv and everything plugged into it(make sure the only thing plugged into the tv is the power cord).
2. next plug in the usb flash drive with the update or a compatible version of the firmware.

3. now while holding down the up arrow button on the tv remote, plug in the tv and keep holding the up arrow while pressing and holding the power button on the side on the tv until you see the light on the tv go from solid green to solid red and yellow flashing lights. once you see this just sit back and wait a few min for it to force the update and it should turn on when its done.

let me know if this works for you as well or if you need any clarification. also know that step three is a pain to do alone and must be all done within a short period of time preferably at the same time.

Flashing green light

Did you try this yet

SYSTEM RESET
If the TV will not respond to either the remote control
or the front panel controls and/or will not power Off,
press the SYSTEM RESET button with a pointed item
like the end point of a paperclip. The TV will turn Off
and the TIMER light will flash quickly for about one
minute. When the TIMER light stops flashing, you may
turn on the TV again. Changes you made the last time
the TV was On before you used the SYSTEM RESET
button may be lost, however, the changes you made
previously are not lost.
POWER/TIMER Indicator
The green light is a multi-function indicator. This light
will flash rapidly for about one minute each time the TV
is plugged into the wall electrical outlet, when power
is restored after a power failure, or using the SYSTEM
RESET button. Do not attempt to turn on the TV again
during this period. Wait for the flashing to stop and
the light to turn off, before attempting to turn the TV
on. While the TV is powered on, the light illuminates
steadily. If the TV has been programmed to turn on
automatically using the Timer feature,

Tv won't turn on

Usually this problem is caused by part failure on circuit board. Most often in power supply or deflection circuit. You will need test equip. and soldering/desoldering tools to fix this set. Most repair services charge 275.00-475.00 to do this repair on a PS60690. Crate is removable by removing rear cover, disconnecting spk. plugs and keyboard plug. Loosen two screws and whole thing slides out. This can save you service call fee.

Proscan not turning on

Actually, the set has the PTK188AC chassis. This is a very uncommon chassis. The most common reason for the set not starting in that chassis is a shorted high voltage splitter. That is the large black box inside the set that has 5 thick red wires in it. When the set is turned on, the computer senses the short in the high voltage circuits and immediately shuts the set back off. When the set is on, that box has dangerously high voltage in it so it should only be replaced by a qualified tech familiar with the high voltage splitters in RCA projection sets.

Proscan PS60690 1st turns off then on by itself. Then 3 on-off cy I've had this exact problem twice. The 1st time I replaced the RCA part number 205064, which I believe is called the HV splitter. I used a generic non RCA part. The TV worked great for several months but went out again and it has been broken for 2 years. I finally ordered the new true RCA part number 205064 HV splitter. The TV, again seemed to be fixed, and what I a beautiful picture it had through our cable box. But, no happy ending at this point. It worked for a couple of days and then turned off and back on while my wife was watching it a few minutyes ago. It cycled off then back on twice in a 3 minute period so with the picture showing and tv still on she went ahead and turned it off. This is how the problem began several years ago the 1st time it went out. I don't want to turn it back on anymore in case the brand new HV Splitter is still OK. Does anyone know what other parts may be going out, causing the HV splitters to go bad and start shorting out. I know the HV spitters have been an ongoing problem with these sets, but since I just put a brand new RCA one in only 2 days ago I'm wondering if something else goes out first and causes the splitter to go bad after a period of time. I would appreciate any help. I can't afford a new set right now and the picture looks so great on this set using a cable box I feel it's definately worth fixing. ps Could missing o-rings cause this? I've never seen the o-rings. Even the first time I replaced the HV Splitter. Thanks
