Turn off printer. Open top cover, where you inserted the new drum. Switch printer on, count to ten...close cover. Drum counter is reset. Simple.

    Press the “Go” and “ ” switches together until the menu “RESET
    PARTS LIFE” appears on the LCD display. Select the Drum Unit using the
    “ /– “ switches, then press the “Set” switch

How to fix brother printer drum error troubleshooting and routine maintenance


I still receive the error message "Replace Drum", "Drum End Soon", "Drum Near End", or "Drum Stop" after I replace the drum unit with a new one. The following error messages will continue to appear if the drum counter was not reset when you replace the drum unit with a new one.
  • Replace Drum

To clear these error messages, you need to reset the drum counter as instructed below.

Please reset the drum counter only when you replace the drum unit. If you reset the drum counter during the life of the drum unit currently being used, the remaining drum life will not be displayed accurately.
  1. Make sure that the machine is turned on.
  2. Open the front cover.
  3. Press Clear or Clear/Back on the control panel.?
    NOTE: The layout of a control panel differs depending on the model, but the Clear or Clear/Back button is located on the right side of the LCD screen as shown in illustration.
  4. Do one of the following.

    • If your Brother machine has a numeric keypad:
      Press 1 to reset the drum counter.
    • If your Brother machine doesn't have a numeric keypad:
      Press the Up Arrow Key to reset the drum counter.
  5. When the LCD shows Accepted, close the front cover.

I have a Brother MFC-9180, it has a DR8000 in it. The machine come up on the display saying "Change drum soon" which I have done, the new drum did not come with a page to feed into the drum. I want to...


Did you reset the drum counter?
When you replace the drum unit with a new one, you need to reset the drum unit counter by completing the following steps:
  1. Turn the the machine's power switch back on.
  2. Press Menu => Machine Info. => Reset Menu.
  3. Press the Up or Down Arrow key to choose Drum.
  4. Press OK.
  5. Press 1 to reset the drum unit counter.
  6. Press Stop/Exit.

Drum & toner were replaced and now the printer PRINTS IN CHARCOAL have replaced the drum and toner twice


I assume "Prints in charcoal" means dirty printouts. The toner is not staying on the paper?

Sounds to me like a bad "Fuser Assembly" problem.

The toner light is on and my printer wont print


If the toner LED still lit even after replacing the drum unit then you know that the Drum counter may not be reset. you need to reset the drum
you can rReset the Drum counter as follows:


Open the front cover.


Locate the control panel button under the LED lights on the left side.
Press the control panel button until all lights are lit, then release it.
The Drum counter is now reset.hope this helps

Replace drum, still says replace the drum and now it won't print.

With the front cover still open, you should press Clear ("Replace Drum?" should appear on the display), and then 1 for Yes. Wait for "Accepted" message and close cover.
It may be necessary to remove the drum unit and put it back in, and then, with the cover open, do the a/m procedure.

  1. Turn the printer power switch back on.
  2. Press the + or - button to choose "Machine Info".
  3. Press OK to proceed to the next menu level, and then press the + or - button to choose
    "Reset Parts Life".
  4. Press OK, and then press the + button to choose "Drum Unit".
  5. Press OK two times.

f the Drum LED is still lit after replacing the drum unit, the Drum counter may not be reset.
