Dell D-600 Wireless Connection/log-on problem

My daughter just left for France to study abroad. Her laptop has been working flawlessly both at her university here as well as at home.

In France at her host family's home, she has tried to logonto their wireless network, but can't.

She's running WinXP-Pro. The laptop detects the network and she has the opportunity to "connect" to it; it is secured and they have and have put in the access code. No sweat so far.

After putting in the correct access code, the password dialog is presented, BUT the P/W field is both "greyed out" as well as being already filled in. The machine will not let her change it so she can log on.

I am sure that this is simply some settings problem, but I can't figure it out and now need the Pro's advice.

Thanks for a quick reply...she's out of service!

The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

Hello, Lyn.

On the left side of your laptop, you'll find a wireless on/off switch. See if that switch was turned off.

Hopefully, that will help.

P.S. I didn't grow up in the computer age, either.

Dell Inspiron 1525 - No wired or wireless network

I suspect the Vodafone wireless adapter software is controlling the Dell wireless adapter. Start> in the search box type CMD
  • Reset WINSOCK by typing netsh winsock reset catalog
  • Reset IPv4 TCP/IP by typing netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
  • Reset IPv6 TCP/IP by typing netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Next make sure the vodafone applcation is not running
Check you are getting a ip from the router by Start> in the search box type CMD
  • ipconfig /all
This will return a list of numbers - what you are looking for is a IP number for your wireless connection
A very useful tool to use for wireless issues is xirrus, http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php If you can copy the program onto the PC thats not working and install and run, this test if your adapter is working and also will display all the networks broadcasting in your area. Which will prove the hardware works.

So u can connect to the router, but you arent allowet to access the internet?
The router gave your dell a new ip-number, but it dident gave you access to the net. You ned to do the settings in your router manual, let the router give your dell full access.

Good luck

Wireless cards

As long as your laptop is running windows 2000 or XP. You can go with almost any PC wireless card. My recommendation would be to take your laptop to your local computer store and they should be able assit you and get you all set up

Thanks
