Acer Aspire T180-UB72 does not boot

Hi
My Acer T180 has all of a sudden stopped booting up. Every time I switch it on all that happens is the ACER start screen appears.  I am given the option to press DEL to Enter Setup or F12 for Boot Menu, but when I press either button nothing happens.
Any advice on what the problem maybe will be greatfully received.
Thanks Dave

    tom19511, thanks for the reply.

I don't think it gets that far during the boot sequence.  I turn the computer on,  get a black screen which lasts for about 2 seconds then the screen with the ACER logo and DEL and F12 button options appear.  I have tried pressing F8 when the black screen appears but nothing happens.
Could it be the motherboard that has broken?

    Thanks
    Dave

tom19511, the hard drive has seemed to be working ok when I last used my PC. The last process to run was to install some microsoft updates when it was closing down.

Dionnow, i'll try the F12/DEL button on the black screen when I get home from work tonight and let you know how I get on.

    Thanks

    Dave

I booted up my acer T180 for the first time in several weeks or a couple months. I downloaded some Microsoft updates, and then told my computer to restart.

The computer never restarted. The fans came on, but the monitor never gave any indication that the computer was in operation.

    1. Fans came on.
    2. The green power light on computer front did not turn on.
    3. Nothing showed up on monitor.
    4. DVD Drive lights were on, and tray could be opened/shut.
    5. When I held in power button, other fans would power up.

I disconnected hard drive, this had no effect.
I disconnected DVD drive, this had no effect.
I removed motherboard CR2032 battery for several minutes, no effect.

Basically, the computer acts as if it is dead, except that the fans will operate and the DVD drive is powered and can open/close.

The computer is not reaching a stage where it is outputting to the monitor.

I have the same model and had the same problem. Fortunately there is a simple fix - unplug all your USB devices (mouses, printers etc). It should now boot!

Assuming that fixed it, it was trying to boot from a USB drive for some unknown reason. I think it was due to the latest windows XP update. Wierd. Hit F12 next time you reboot and make sure it is booting from hard disk first.

I had the same problem as above. I tried disconnecting everything one by one till I got the the front panel connector (2 USB and Audio sockets at the front). The machine booted with it disconnected. I reconnected and tried again, and it worked. Still working as we speak. Dunno if this is the ultimate solution but give it a go!!

Hi
we had the same problem and our acer was just out of warranty..... I had this on an older comp and found that a virus had hit the ram and would stop the comp from loading up... I have had to reinstall windows xp and all the settings if possible take the hard drive out and have it checked (a decent local pc repair shop will help) try your back up disc or get your local pc shop to reinstall the factory setting ( you`ll need to make sure you have your windows serial number still attached to the side of the case.) cost around £40 .

Yea, If you get stuck at the ACER screen then you defiantially arent getting far enough to get to the windows boot menu. DEL or F12 should allow you to access your BIOS settings. You want hit f12 / del while at the black screen / acer screen. This should UNCONDITIONALLY take you to the bios screen. If it does not, you might be correct in your last assumption

Hope this helps!

Press F8 during the black screen/white words screen to access the advanced startup menu. Choose to use the last known good configuration that worked

dvmurray, You have a hardware problem. What it is is difficult to tell. My guess would be the hard drive. Has it been noisy or acted crummy before this happened?

Hi,

Acer Aspire computer has a recovery partition so called D drive. I am sorry to say that you will not be able to access this drive.
But you can try this, open D drive and go to My Documents or Documents and then try to save any file. Hope this should take care of the issue

Thanks and regards,

Im guessing the PC starts up flashes the lights turns off and repeats?

If so the hard drive boot sector is gone or damaged. Try to boot from the Windows disk.
