Question about Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 Notebook

Slow Laptop Performance

Toshiba Portege R205-S2062

  • Freezes while typing text
  • Freezes when accessing Internet Explorer
  • Freezes when accessing desktop files or my documents
  • Access to wireless internet operations ceased in the last 7 days

The computer is approximately 2yrs old.

Please help me. I've done a download of RegistryCleanFix; defragmented the hard drive to times to 57% operating availability and cleaned out cookies. What could be left to make it slow down?

Total Physical Memory is 512MB and the available is 84.84 with virtual memory at 2GB and 1.96GB available. The BIOS Version date is 6/8/2005.

You need to follow some simple steps to boost up your speed. Before using the 3rd party utilities I suggest you to start with windows own utilities. Perform disk clean up,

Start> All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Clean up

Reduce the quantity of startup programs simple type MSCONFIG after open the Run option and enter. uncheck the non essential applications (You can consider non essential software aside hotkey utility and antivirus). After click on apply and OK restart prompt will appear. "Dont Restart"

Go to My Computer, Right click on C drive and choose "Properties" click the Tools tab and click on the check now button in Disk error checking area. Check both of the boxes when it prompt. And click on OK. It will inform you that system unable to check as its in use therefore it will start when you restart computer. It will perform 5 steps error checking. It might take up to 1 hour.

Once computer start it will be definitely faster. however you have still many ways to choose better performance over some value added features. Like you can choose best performance instead of best appearance. Also you can disable System Restore feature this will increase performance and speed while feature will be not available.

Hi Rhem,
I can't seem to get the Expery chat to work, but will wonk on that issue.
First, uninstall RegistryCleanFix.
Next, get this antispyware, and see if any bugs moved in,,

For 512 meg ram, that swap file/Virtual Memory is set pretty high. I would look at setting it to let the system control it, as a test.
How many Icons are by your time? These are programs starting, and can use up a lot of memory.
You can disable any unneeded ones by going to Start>run>and type in MSCONFIG. In the startup tab, you can disable any that aren't needed. As for the "which ones are needed" :D,, we would have to know what ones are in there. Try the antispyware fix, and let us know if we need to go further.

Next time it freezes up hit cont+alt+ del open task manager and go to aplications tab and at the bottom hit new task. type in explorer.exe and see if this un freezes it.

You did not mention your OS version, I give instructions for Windows XP, but it's similar in other versions.
- press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, if needed select "Task Manager" and see the bottom line of the window.
- Commit Charge shows used memory, should be significantly below 512M. For an optimised Windows XP it's below 250M. If it's more than 300 you should investigate your computer for running processes (viruses? spyware? useless software?)
- CPU usage shows the percentage of CPU resources used currently. If it's around 100% see the "Processes" page of the window, you can see different programs and modules running at the moment and their CPU and memory usage. This can give you an idea who's eating up resources.
- you can lookup every process you don't know in Google and see what's it for. You can stop a process by selecting it and clicking "End Process" but do so only after investigating it. Ending a process is temporary until restart.
- see in Control Panel, Add and remove programs, you may want to uninstall all useless programs there (don't remove updates and look in Google for every program you don't know before removing it). Uninstalling a program is permanent, contrary to killing a process from the previous step.
- install an antivirus if you don't have one. There is a nice free one at Let it update itself and run a full system scan (takes hours to complete)
- install an anti-spyware program. I recommend Ad-Aware from, the free version is completely enough. Run a full system scan (takes another hours)
Never use more than one antivirus or anti-spyware utility.

You could have a virus and malware infection.
Please download run these utilities in safe mode.

ccleaner - will clean all the crap out.
spybot - will clean your system of malware
adaware - will finish cleaning system of malware.
your favorite antivirus. I like AntiVir. You know what these do.

Yeah i had a customer with that same problem firsti check the power adapter but it turns out it was good, then i looked at the battery but that was good as well..

It turns out the power coils on the mainboard was bad, since this doesnt have a replacable power controll circut he had to change the board.


Take you laptop to a store and tell them you want to purchase an adapter but you will likw to be sure its working. Jack it in and see if it works. If not tell them you want a battery and try it the same way. If it works thats fine if not, Tell them you want a replacement main board.
