From what you describe this can be one of two errors:
IF YOUR CONSOLE TURNS ON, BUT NOTHING COMES ON THE SCREEN:
This may be caused by going from HDMI to AV cables. The ps3 does not automatically adjust video for AV cables, so you have to reset your consoles video settings to factory settings. This can be done by turning the console completely off(turn it off in the front and wait for a red light, then turn the switch off in the back. If you dont do it in this order, it can corrupt your hard drive!). Once your console is completely off hold your finger on the one button in the front. While continuing to hold the one button in the front, turn the switch on in the back. After several seconds you should hear several beeps. This confirms that it has been set back to factory video settings. Dont get discouraged if it does not work on the first try, sometimes it takes several attempts.
IF YOUR CONSOLE DOES NOT COME ON AND THE POWER LIGHT FLASHES YELLOW AND RED:
This is known as the yellow light of death. This is caused by dust buildup in your console, then the console overheating. When the console overheats is causes solder to melt on the board, makeing it bridge(connect). Once the solder bridges it shorts the board giving you the error you have now. Contact sony and see if the unit is still under warranty with this site: https://service1.us.playstation.com/rma.htm?_flowExecutionKey=_cAB96F84F-8DB4-2C4E-3368-C3B01BB770F5_k8997F39E-B8B8-B1EF-51B9-162937A6B113

Here is an extract from an article I recently wrote about
fixing the BSOD error. Hopefully it is of use to you:
The first thing you need to do is to see if you can repair your PS3 by fixing a broken HDMI connection between your console and your TV. Firstly, power down your console if it switched on. Next, you can try simply removing the HDMI cable and then re-inserting it, thus fixing the connection if it was loose.
If this does not work then your HDMI cable may actually be damaged; try swapping to a different cable (borrow one off of a friend or family member) and see if that fixes the problem. If so then you will need to purchase a new HDMI cable to permanently fix your Playstation 3 black screen problems.
However, if trying a new cable does not fix your PS3 and get rid of that pesky blank screen then you more than likely have a settings conflict on your console that needs to be resolved.
The good news is that this is not particularly difficult to repair either. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to reset your PS3 console to its factory default settings - please note that if done correctly this should not delete any saved games or information stored on your hard drive.
1. Place your Playstation in "stand-by" mode.
2. Hold down the touch power button until you hear three beeps.
3. Continue to hold down the button until you hear two short beeps, followed by one longer beep.
4. Release the power button, and a series of instructions should appear on screen.
5. Follow these instructions until you see a list of 6 options.
6. Select option number 2, then follow the rest of the on-screen instructions.
By doing this you will hopefully fix your PS3 black screen errors permanently, and without having to pay Sony to repair the problem if your console happens to be out of warranty. Playstation 3 problems such as the blank screen are generally easily fixed, you just need to know exactly what you are doing.

SOURCE: ps3 red screen of death
Try to borrow a HDMI cable from someone else, or try yor setup on another HDTV, and sdee if the results are the same, then at least you can narrow down the problem to the TV or the cable.
