Try Craftsman first, it was probably manufactured by Poulan. If you find out which model Poulan it is and give us a little more detail most of us are quite helpful. Lou

SOURCE: need to rewind craftsman chainsaw pull rope.

I have tried to do this many times and have yet to suceed, believe me it's not worth the fustration and the extra days in hell you will spend from cussing.

Take to a repair shop, they can do it quickly and cheaply when you consider how difficult this is for the ordinary person. (me)

SOURCE: broken recoil spring

A new spring comes wound tight enough to be dropped into place in the starter housing (Easiest).

I invert and secure the housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, both hands and no women around work area!). I'm right handed so i tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely inserted. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. It will require about 2 turns of pretension to retract properly.
If you're lucky you can pull the cord out enough for a pretension then slightly raise and add the withdrawn cord to the spool.

Both methods require about 2 turns of pretension to rewind the cord when pulled.

SOURCE: lost my manual for my poulan pro 255 chainsaw the

If looking for parts your OM is of little value. You can find an IPL (exploded parts list) here (only one PP255 listed):
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP255-Gas-Saw/75.PP255-Gas-Saw.1.59.1.html
Rear vibration (isolation spring)s appear to be item 5 or 59 on the "Exterior Assembly" print.

Poulan replacement OM.

There is contact us number in the OM if you want to contact Poulan. HTH

The bracket that has the Idler Pulley is broken? Well that's why it doesn't work. Not sure what the real question is.
If the Bracket was intact, I would have guessed a Broken Spring that attaches to that bracket has broken

How to recoil the spring on a pull start cord for a craftsman pressure washer model # 580 750 400

If no repair manual. It could be spring is broken. So I'd look for spring, and instructions to install spring. That should give you a good idea. I suppose the handle came off and lost the rope inside? Probably need new rope too. Same kind of instructions would apply in how to recoil if it's not broken.

Recoil will not retract

its one of 2 problems. a: you have jammed it when you pulled on it or b: the spring has broken. simply take a spanner and undo the pull starter housing 1-2 turns and tap the chainsaw on the ground while flicking the cable tight and loose. and if that doesnt work try a flat bladed screw driver to see if theres tension inside the housing by trying to turn it back towards recoiling.. if it doesnt at least un jam you may have a broken spring. which means a trip to the tools shop to see if you can get them to replace it. or if your courageous take the whole housing off and see if its broken or not (watch out in case your pull starter features a rather nasty long flat piece of wound up spring steel that likes to come out of there at a pace fast enough to take an unwary eye out)

Pull cord stuck in the out position

this can be caused by sevral things inside the pull cord hub assembly. examples: Dirty inside & needs taken apart & cleaned. something logged inside, plastic spool tabs broke, spring/s broke, levers broke or any of these items could just be to worn. replacement parts should be available.

Poulan starter rope

to fix starter rope first you must wind spring and place back in housing. just grab spring by middle and wind ,you will have to get it smaller than housing hole. One end should hook to a tab at housing rest of it sets inside itself. once set in housing dont let go, insert rope housing over top & screw in. rope housing should have some return spring to it when pulled. if rope is not tight on return pull simply add one winding to spool. hope it helps!

Broken Pull String

Yes, it is possible that the spring needs to be pre-tensioned. its also possible that something was put together a little out of alignment, or some part is too tight and its too hard for the spring to wind in the chord. try to reassemble the chainsaw with a couple more turns on the spring and see if that helps.
