Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

My Kenmore washer model 700, top loading, has a problem with the drum. It seems the drum is let go.it starting jumping around. The washer is only 1 year and 4 months old and warranty expired. Anyone know if this is a serious problem? I'm about to call an appliance technican.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

It sounds as if the "spin tube" that turns the drum has become dis-connected from the "drive block" which locks the spin tube to the drum.

See the following for how to access the tube and drive block.

You don't need a special spanner wrench to remove the spanner nut. I've used a short 10" pipe wrench hooked around one of the tabs on the nut and hit the handle of the wrench with a hammer to loosen it.

Also, don't directly hit the drive block with a hammer (it's soft metal) instead put a short piece of wood under the drive block and tap the wood up with a hammer.

If the tabs on the drive tube aren't aligned with the slots in the drive block, the tub can move around.

Kenmore 80 series washedr stopped workingv with water in drum

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

Looks like a belt underneath fell off.whats that for and how do you replace it

If it's a direct drive washer, the belt is likely simply a sound deadening device (a rubber belt about 1/4" high and about 8" around ) that fits around the brake drum.

If that is it, and everything else is fine, you don't have a problem.

go to sears.com and find the parts listing for the 110 model number you have listed above .http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/retrieveModelActionHome!retrieve.action;jsessionid=8mJfynqZfmsdSyTnd9kaQw**.shcapp3005?modelNumber=110.16502694+&pop=flush

You might need one of the springs. unplug the washer and take the cabinet off first. look around for broken or missing parts
