Display is all garbled on bootup, cannot read image.

Display is all garbled on sytem bootup. This just started the other day with no warning or event to cause this condition. Looks like a graphics chip problem as images appear but are all garbled and unreadable..

Test if it's your graphics chip by connecting a desktop monitor to the laptops serial port, reboot the laptop, and look to see if same thing happens on the external monitor.. If it does, then you have a failing gpu/graphics chip.

Self having the following configuration on Home desktop PC. INTEL 1.7GHz, P4, D845GBV motheboard with AGP ATI Radeon 9000 graphics card, RAM is 2 x DIMM DDR2 266 Hz, 1 x 1GB + 1 x 512MB total 1.5GB RAM....

Power down and disconnect AC power from your PC. Remove the AGP card and DIMM again and use some "canned air" or dusting spray to get any dust off the contacts on your motherboard and your memory and AGP card. Wiping the AGP card contacts with some isopropyl alcohol (also known as IPA or "rubbing alcohol") and a clean, lint-free cloth can also help. When everything is dry, put your card and memory back in and try powering up again.

How do I get the intermatic dt27 timer to work with out astro? I set it for an event, but it still uses the sunrise/sunset operation.

This manual is a bit confusing because it jumps across steps without telling you.

Look at manual instructions above Fig 11 where it says "Programming ON/OFF event times without astro." This is where your instructions are.

But let's start back at Fig 6. Setting DST
I think the instructions jump from DST at Fig 6 to programming at Fig 11

DST says:
If you want timer to compensate for DST, the display automatically defaults to AUTO.
If you do not want DST, press SET+ or ENTER/NEXT and display reads MANUAL
Then it says: Press MODE+ to go set up ASTRO feature

But you don't want ASTRO

I think this is where you by-pass ASTRO completely by pressing MODE+ until the screen looks like Fig 11 below:
d506e70.jpg

Now you are at programming steps to right of Fig 11:
EVENT1 shows in screen
-Press Day to set days > you keep pressing Day to show M-F, Sat-Sun, or individual days
Then use SET+ and SET- to set ON time for EVENT1

Press ENTER/NEXT to go to EVENT2
EVENT2 is OFF time for EVENT1

Tip: Other intermatic timers ignore all Events that conflict ... so you might make on-off chart before programming

After EVENTs are programmed, press MODE+ to go to AUTO

Programing of UTILITECH 0192773

All the information you need is in the instructions The problem is the instructions are printed so small and the way they are printed make them confusing. I will assume that you have the wiring correct. The timing goes like this: First press the time button The display will turn to the year. Press the + or - button to set the year press time. The display for the month begins flashing Press + or - to set the month. Press time , the day begins flashing Press + or - to set the day press time . The aera of the country flashes. Press + or - to correct aera press time. Programing: Press program This gets you in to the Sun up / sun set mode . You can change the times here by +or- . OR press program through this to program the daily time. Press program the display reads 12:00 not flashing.
Press + or - to set the day or days . The display is realy hard to see. You will need to look almost under the top baisel to read it . + or - throgh to the day or days you want . press time . The display starts to flash . Push + or - to the time you want to turn on. press program. You are now in the OFF mode for this event. Set the off mode as above and press program. Set as many of the 7 events as you need in the same maner. When you are finished press time for 2 to 3 sec. Be sure that the timer is in AUTO mode or nothing you have done will work.

My display is garbled. I can hardly read the letters because of characters which shows up. Is the video card separate or integrated with the motherboard? Are there available video cards or motherboards...

I don't know any laptops that have separate video cards, they are integrated with the motherboard.
To test if the video card is faulty, connect an external monitor to the laptop's external video connector/port and boot up your laptop. The external monitor may automatically display images, if not you may have to press the blue Fn key plus one of thr function keys to switch the video output to this video port. If you see a clear image the the Video card is OK and the LCD is faulty.
Is the display garbled or it is very dim?
If it is dim and the image is OK then the problem is associated with the backlight. It could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or the CCFL lamp is faulty and 80% of the time it is the CCFL lamp.
The inverter is easy to replace but the CCFL lamp requires more work and soldering skills.

IBM Laptop A31 2652 Garbled video even at initial boot screen

Connect an external monitor to the laptop, power up the monitor first and then bootup the laptop. The Windows image will automatically divert to the external monitor.
If the images is OK then the video card is OK.
From the description of the fault, it indicates that the fault could be a faulty video cable or video connector. Try reseating the video cable/connector on the motherboard.
Get back to me if you still have problems together with any error messages etc.

BSoD, Garbled Screen, Boot Failure.

If you are getting garbage on the screen before windows tries to load the laptop probably has a bad motherboard.

It's possibly only the video output is going bad on it, try hooking it to an external monitor and see if you get the same weird stuff on that screen.

Good luck, let me know how it goes
