Did you try charging it with the USB cord or do you have an adapter that plugs into the wall? If you tried with the USB cord, how long did you let it charge?

There are a variety of things that could be wrong. If the Ipod sat for a long time the battery could be completely discharged. I've not had this problem on the Nano, but on an old Ipod Mini my daugher has I've noticed that sometimes I need to plug it in with a wall adapter to get the battery charged enough to start up quickly.

Forgive me for asking this next question...lots of times I ask these basic question and people get mad, but the key lock is off, right? On my Nano there's a small slider switch on the top. In one position the controls are all locked. Please verify that you've got it set to the right position. Mine is locked when I can see the red dot.

Assuming the battery is not totally shot and the key lock is off, it's also possible that it's just "locked up". To reset the Nano press and hold both Menu and Select (center button) for about 5 or 10 seconds. If the Ipod is alive this will reset it.

From your post, I'm not sure if you mean the Ipod was sitting for a long time without being used. If that's the case and it used to work, and it has not gotten wet or anything, then the most likely problem is a bad battery. There are services on the web you can find who will replace the battery for a fee. If, on the other hand, it just suddenly stopped working and the reset does not help you may have a more serious problem. Unfortunately there's no way to tell.

Now for the editorial section. I don't get paid for this. I know it's a strange hobby, but I lke to help when I can. The reason lots of people won't respond to questions like yours is because there's a real chance that your Ipod battery is dead or the unit is just plain broken. So they offer some suggestions which, obviously, won't work and then they get a bad rating. Even if my suggestions don't fix you problem I hope you'll find them useful in deciding if the Ipod is just plain dead. If you have more questions please ask. Thanks and good luck.

It sounds like you have the top hold switch set in the right position.

Did you try the reset? Hold down the Center (select) Button and the Menu Button at the same time. Hold it for at least 5 seconds or so.

How long ago did your daughter use it? Are we talking days or months? Did you plug the USB cord directly into the computer or do you have an external USB hub? Many times the hubs will not have sufficient power to charge.

I'm hoping this information is at least "Helpful". You rated it, "Thanks for Trying" which means I've done nothing to help you at all. Like I said, this is why many people don't respond to questions like this. I hope you'll reconsider.

Here are the exact directions for resetting the Nano from the Apple website. Just to be throrough I would do exactly what they say:

    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

More questions: Was your computer on and awake the entire time it was charging or does your computer "go to sleep" after a while? The Ipod will only charge while the computer is awake?

I just found another document that suggested the Reset procedure while the Ipod is connected to the computer via the USB cable. You might try that.

Also, do you have any other computers that you can try charging the Ipod from?

Thank you for improving the rating. I appreciate it.

I read that if the battery is completely discharged it can take 30 minutes or longer to see any life from the Ipod. I would let it charge for a few hours if you can then try the reset.

    Thank you and good luck.

If the computer does not see it when you plug it in it's another indication that something is wrong. I think your battery is completely discharged or the Ipod has some other problem. Leaving it plugged in overnight and then trying the reset as you said is a good idea. Again, it is plugged directly into a USB port on the computer right?

When you come in tomorrow try the reset before you disconnect it from the computer. Let me know. Good luck.

I'm here in the US, but I just found some kits that you can buy to replace and Ipod Nano battery yourself for about $30. If it does not work in the morning you might consider trying this. It will be a gamble, because the problem may not be the battery, but there's really no way to find out unless you try. I know it might sound itimidating but changing the battery should not be that hard and if it's not working anymore you'll have nothing to lose. If you go this route I would just get on Google and search for Ipod Nano replacement batteries. Good luck.

That's great news. I'm happy for you.

Any time you plug in an Ipod it will tell you "Do not disconnect". The only way to get rid of this message is to start Itunes and then press the eject button once the Ipod is recognized. If you don't have Itunes on that computer you'll just have to disconnect. Sometimes this will lockup the Ipod, but then you should just need to reset it again. No harm will be done and no files will be lost.

IPod Nano, white, 4gb, I want to delete existing podcasts from the library in my iPod. Podcasts show up on the iPod but not on my PC. The podcast category shows up on the PC but the PC podcast library...

I've had a similar problem in the past. The files on your iPod don't show up on your PC because your daughter put them there via another computer (possibly a Mac), and/or software other than iTunes. Your PC just can't detect them.

I used free software called Floola (, to manually go into the iPod directory and deleted the unwanted files. It's very easy to do. Hope this helps.

Problem with ihome and ipod nano.

yes, unfortunately the ihome iH9 is not compatible with previous models of the ipod nano.

if you want a similar device, there are many other docking stations for the ipod that are ip0 that ARE compatible with the ipod nano 2G

iH85B is another ihome dock which is compatible with all ipods after the ipod mini (including the ipod nano 2G)

Ipod nano, hitting eject results in system restart

First, make sure you have installed the software from the iPod CD. in any case, try to reinstall it. Second, Try connecting to a different USB 2.0 port on your computer. Last, Your iPod nano might need to be reset (see page 43 on the user guide). By the way: If you?re using a Mac, you can also eject iPod nano by dragging the iPod nano icon on the desktop to the Trash. If you?re using a Windows PC, you can eject iPod nano by clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray and selecting your iPod nano.
