Check the system status (Start, Control Panel, System) to make sure that the system senses the full amount of memore on your system.
Check the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) Performance to check the Physical Memory being utilized.
If these are as expected, you may have a virus.
Run a virus scan such as McAfee, Norton Anti-Virus, or Kaspersky to clean any viruses. You may also want to run a registry cleaner such as System Mechanic or RegCure.
These will clear the majority of the problems in your described situation.
