Most likely it's NOT the motor...If you can remove the entire timer box, or "Power Head", you will see that the main dial is easy to turn..remember..." CLOCKWISE ONLY!!!!"...the problem is more likely the main piston the is locking up in the valve bore, you can find parts for this valve online...you will need a new main piston, a brine piston (the smaller one on the right) and a set of spacers and seals.

If your using any product like IronOut, or anything with Sodium Hydrosulfate in it, this can cause the burnt rubber smell....If your softener has Anion resin, or other resin used for Tannins, you need to add a few ounces of Citric Acid to the brine tank every month or so

There may a salt bridge in the salt tank. Eductor nozzle may be plugged preventing brine draw.

Where to put the salt? and how to flush it? thank you wg844

Dump the salt in the separate brine tank. Always keep salt/brine tank at least half full. If you want to run a manual regeneration push the regen button. For delayed regeneration (2am) push once, for immediate regeneration push twice.

You most likely have a slight leak in the brine line. This is the most common failure on a water softener. A slight leak will allow air to enter during brine draw, breaking the vacuum. it doesn't take much of leak, in fact it can be small enough that water does not leak out during brine refill but it will not draw brine. Check the compression fittings at the brine tank and the softener valve. disassemble the connection, cut back the tubing and reconnect. Other things to look for are low water pressure, the unit requires 25 psi minimum during regeneration. Also make sure the drain line is not restricted and the maximum head on the drain is 4' over the softener.

Kinetico Water Softening Unit has brine tank drainage problem

This sounds like the resin cylinder is perforated or connections at the top are leaking. The brine tank should only have a little water in the bottom - if it is full of water (maybe even up to the overflow?) then you will need to replace the resin cylinder or fix a leaky connection to it.

Is the water in the brine tank 'rusty'?

Not getting soft water. The system charges but it does not seem to be getting brine from the tank to wash the softener pellets. Is there some way for me to check the valve. Maybe change a simple part. ...

You need to remove the venturi valve and clean it. This part is usually found under a round plastic cap that unscrews remember to put softner on bypass or turn off water first

It is very common for the main and brine pistons of the Fleck 5600 to need replacement after 5 - 10 years of use. The valve will get stuck trying to complete a regeneration cycle. Very often this occurs at the beginning of the "brine rinse" cycle. The timer motor may stop at this point also. The motors are made to stop instead of forcing the valve ( which would result in gear damage ).
The solution is to replace the main piston ( # 60102-00 for water softeners ) and the brine valve piston assembly ( # 60032 ). If the valve is on a chlorinated water source or over 10 years old, it is recommended to replace the main piston seals ( # 60125 ) at the same time.
On rare occasions the timer motor may also need to be replaced. But try the pistons replacement first, this usually does the trick.
There are detailed instructions for replacement including a video here.
