Mitsubishi WS-55859 Short Protect Problem

I am in need of some technical advice. My Mitsubishi WS-55859 shutdown a week ago. My wife said that for 20 minutes before it shutdown, it appeared to have a tracking problem like from an old VCR. She went on to say that it only seemed to affect the bottom of the screen and jumped at times and then cleaned up and repeated that cycle several times before shutting down. Before this, the TV seemed fine. The only thing I perceived was a very slight downward bow on the lower right hand corner of the screen. This was barely noticeable on a channel with a ticker stripe along the bottom.

If you try to power up the power LED illuminates for a couple of seconds, relay engaging sound is heard and then it shuts itself down.

I have read several internet posts that have helped me immensely. I did the self diagnostic check and got the 2-2 message for short protect. I was also able to verify that there is no continuity across either of the 5 amp pico fuses (F9A04 and F9A05). Obviously, these fuses failed for a reason. Based on some of the postings that I have seen, is it fair to assume that the convergence IC’s are bad? Is there some way to test them or would you just replace both IC’s and both fuses and fire it up? or are there other components that are likely suspect?

Thanks in advance for your willingness to share information. I appreciate your posts.

That would be great. I have a service manual, but it didn't give me a lot of troubleshooting advice. Thanks. I look forward to receiving it.

I haven't finished pulling the board out of the television, but I noticed from the wiring diagram that I was reviewing that it appears their is only one convergence IC chip. It is shown as tag # IC8C01, part # STK393-110. Is that reasonable that their is only one chip, or am I missing something? Thanks for the reply.

Great. Thanks for the confirmation and tip. I ordered the parts and will let you know how things go in a few days.

Wow! What a beautiful picture. Thanks for the advice. My parts showed up and I replaced both fuses and the convergence IC and it fired up beautifully.

I would definitely replace both of the ICs and fusible links.
Remember to use heat sink compound for the STKs (found at any electronic parts store including Radio Shack).
Once parts are installed minor alignment on the convergence would be in order.
Any Questions may be directed to this post and I will respond.

My mistake, I should have looked at the schematic first. This Model does have only one IC controlling all three colors. When you pull out the IC, the pins seem to break away from the case. I usually shake the board to make sure none of the little legs falls anywhere and shorts out something else.

Mitsubishi projection WS-55859 shutting off when it wants to. Is there a cooling fan for the processor or something

Projection TVs usually cool very well. Dust or dirt can increase the heat if left coating the electronics inside. Blowing the dirt may only move it from one place to another, bets you vacuum it out. Just be careful to be gentle. A thermal switch is use with many devices to protect the unit from overheating. That thermal device can go bad also. Perhaps contacting Mitsubishi technical service will solve the problem.

Mitsu WS-55859---turned off & only powers up for 2 secs

2,2 is short protection.

98% chance the fuse or fuses (there are two 5 amp pico fuses) that protect the convergence circuit are blown. If you find F9AO4 OR F9AO5 on that board check them--if either is open the STK-393-110 DID IT.

Fairly short life for this chip if it was installed correctly and had heat sink compound applied to it--once in a while you get a bad one.

Mitsubishi model ws-55859 tv is red and red

If it is WS-55859 and you go into the customer menu and find red or blue are skewed and will not adjust---you have a convergence problem.

This model uses a single STK-393-110 convergence chip--it and any of the protect resistors around it that are bad will need to be replaced and the set adjusted.

The chip can be purchased on Ebay for about 12 dollars plus shipping--total parts cost should be under 30 dollars!

I HAVE START TO FINISH, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS REPAIR IN THIS MODEL.

They tell you everything you will need and how to do the repair---If you or someone you know can do it I can post or get the instructions to you.

If you cannot do it shop around your area--most shops are going to get 300 or MORE for this kind of repair and many will not do in in your home--Any good tech can do it in your home in about 1 hour--I know as I have done hundreds of them.

If you have questions or need help let me know--I am here to help people.

Good Day; This model is equipped with a self-diagnosis feature to help with diagnosis of shutdown problems. To activate this turn the unit on let it shutdown then press the input/device and menu buttons on the front panel simultaneously and hold them in for 5 seconds after 5 seconds the power LED on the front panel will blink a two digit sequence. This will be one set of blinks a short pause then another set of blinks, this will repeat 5 times. 1 - 2 = no error detected 2 - 1 = X-ray protect (high voltage or beam current) 2 - 2 = Short protect (short protect monitors low voltage supplies) 2 - 3 = Deflection protect (this could be loss of vertical or horizontal deflection) 2 - 4 = Vertical protect (usually loss of vertical from the source) 1. SELF- DIAGNOSIS INDICATE X-RAY. CHECK FOR A SHORTED IC5A03 PART # 270P704010 AND AN OPEN R5A73 82K ¼ WATT OFF PIN 2 OF IC5A02 ON THE MAIN PCB. 2. SELF DIAGNOSIS ERROR INDICATES SHORT PROTECT. CHECK FOR OPEN FUSES F9A04 AND F9A05 PART # 283P043090 ON THE +24 AND -24 VOLT LINES. IF THE FUSES ARE OPEN THE CONVERGENCE OUTPUT CIRCUIT WOULD BE SUSPECT. 3. SELF-DIAGNOSIS INDICATES SHORT PROTECT. CHECK FOR A SHORTED IC4B01 PART # 270P261020 (VERTICAL OUTPUT) LOADING 24-VOLT SUPPLY LINE. LOCATED ON THE MAIN PCB. Good Luck, big IRISH.
