This sounds like you have a piece of paper behind tray one.
1. Turn the machine off
2. Take out tray 1
3. Remove paper
4. Insert tray
5. Turn back on

If that doesn't help, you have and issue with the paper pick up motor. This is 99% of the time not the issue. The paper behind the tray is most likely your problem.

Duplexer problem

There are several thing which may cause unexpected jams in the duplex tray...,
1. first thing to do is eliminate all other possibilities by removing the netCard/Net connection Parralel connection so the machine is Stand Alone. make sure there is paper in the feed cassette 2 ( paper Tray)
press the TICK to enter menu
scroll down to diagnostic- press TICK
scroll down to paper path test - press Tick
scroll down to Source and select tray 2
scroll down to Duplex And select YES
( if the duplex option is not visible here then there is a connection/seating problem with the duplex tray)
Scroll down to copies and select 10
scroll up to print test page and press tick
the machine should now start duplexing 10 pages,
if you get the same error ( 1 page enters then jams)
it could be a dirty/snapped paper entry sensor,( looks like a little plastic match stick that protrudes into the feed path of the paper)
use a can of pressurised air to Blast any dust away from this arm and the surrounding area being careful to follow the Paper sensor Arm back to the sensor and blasting this as well-
Duplexer tray are cheaper than an engineer call out, if the fix above fails , your cheapest option may be a replacement Duplexer tray, available from most HP office equipment Stores as well as Belmonte Business Equipment.

I use a CM2320nf MFP connected to Windows XP. The unit seems to be defaulted to print 2 pages - and for double sided copies, it stops after 2 pages, then the Cleaning window pops up, then I get an error...

Problem 1 :
As far as the machine printing 2 pages per job. To fix this it's usually the default number of copies the printer is set to. To change/ confirm the setting is set to one:
Press the menu button
Arrow down to -> Printing, Press the green check to enter the menu
Arrow down to -> Copies Press the green check to enter the menu
Change or confirm the value = 1, (Based on your question this might be set to 2) Press the green save the value.
* If your number of copies is set to 1 and the machine is still printing 2 copies, then the problem relays in your print driver.

Problem 2: General Misprint Error message something like 41.3
2 things to check:

1st - Press the menu button
Arrow down to Paper Handling, Press the green check to enter the menu
Now you will see options like Tray 1 size - Tray 1 type. Here their will be a option for each tray installed on your machine. You will go into each tray option and confirm the paper size and type.
Example
Tray 1 Size = Envelope #10 (This is the manual feed tray)
Tray 1 Type = Envelope
Tray 2 Size = Letter
Tray 2 Type = Plain

To perform arrow down to tray X size press the green check to access the menu, arrow up or down to select your paper size. Once the paper size is selected press the green check to save it. repeat for each tray.

2nd -
Pull out your tray and remove the paper, towards back of the tray you will see a guide (Tab) in the middle of the tray which allows you to expand the tray to accept various paper sizes, Please confirm the guide is set to the correct type. If your using letter, make sure the guide is set to letter (LTR) you can see these codes by looking at the base of the guide, their is a little arrow pointer.

Hope this helps

I have had my MFC-9420CN for about 4 years. For

mrbarbazza, I feel your pain. I have had a Brother MFC-9420CN for just under 4 years now and for the past 4 months or so, I have been randomly getting the "Paper Jam A1" error. It is particularly annoying when printing or copying a multiple page document and the error occurs on page 3, for example. I pull out the paper tray only to find a perfectly good, undamaged piece of paper that has been half (or less) fed out of the tray which comes out with the tray; it is not even stuck in the printer. I put it back in place in the tray, reinsert the tray into the printer, wait for the printer to go through all kinds of gyrations after which I either have to start the entire print job all over again, or the printer does it on its own. Very rarely will it pick up where it left off. The really frustrating part is, during this next printing, it will get to maybe page 7 out of 10 and the same thing happens. I go through the whole process as does the machine and the whole print job has to start all over again. The last 20 page document that I was copying required all of my restraint to keep me from throwing the whole printer out of my second story window. Now I just print or copy one page at a time and even then I still randomly get the error; there is no rhyme or reason to it. The web is full of several other problems that this multi-function machine has, none of which I have experienced. Your post is the first thing I've seen that even mentions this problem that we have had. Unfortunately I have no solution to offer you. Your post helped me realize that I was not alone with this issue, so I just wanted to return the favor. If I come across any solution, I will be sure to post it here. Best of luck to you.

Why is this tekronix 860 printer kept flashing error message saying missing upper tray. However, all trays are intact. It looks like a sensor issue

Tektronix printer paper trays, I seem to recall that there's a plastic key that fits on the right side of the paper tray. It's a little plastic piece that just clips in on the right side of the paper tray. Sounds like it's missing

Ricoh AP3800C "Output tray full"

Check the little black piece of plastic that senses the printed page exiting the machine. Our sensor was stuck and I was getting the same message (an similar Ricoh product). When I gently reset the black piece to center, moving freely, printing worked again. I think the sensor got jammed up when we were trying to remove a bad paper misfeed.

Ricoh manuals very confusing on this error message. They refer to standard tray, tray one, etc. without being clear whether it's a paper feed tray or the so-called "standard OUTPUT tray." The output is not really a tray, it's just the depression where your sheet lands after printing. I wrenched on the paper feed trays and their settings for an hour before I figured out they meant OUTPUT.

Paper Jam

Stick a 9x11 piece of cardboard down into the paper tray. It will push any small piece of paper that may be caught there.

HP 6210 All-In-One

Open up the top and look into the cartridge/paper print area. Look in the corners, Sometimes little pieces of paper can still be stuck there. Once you are convinced that the paper and cartridge path is clear then...

Pull out the paper tray. Look inside the opening. If there is paper there then pull it out.

Take all of the paper out of the paper tray.
Turn it over (paper on top is now on the bottom of the tray)

Try it now.

Crumpled paper comes out of copy machine

Firstly make sure that in the cassette the paper tray guides are fully against the paper as if they are not the paper will wiggle through the machine and cause your fault. If this doesn't work then check the paper path as there maybe a small piece of paper causing it to shift and turn causing the crumple. Also check the fuser and the little plastic stripper fins as they may have dried toner on them causing the fault.

Hope this helps you
Thanks J
