Depending on where the hole is a sometimes it can be repaired. Often they connot be economically repaired. You will have to call a repair service to come a look at it to see if a repair is possible.

Unless you have a lot of expensive refrigeration tools and a license to recover and buy freon, then you need a serviceman.

Freezer not cold, refrigerator is cool. Everything melted in the freezer. No ice

Causes of that is temperature control is defective or undercharge freon, clogged dirty particle inside the system of your refrigerator, it need to be clean by flushing the system, sealed the hole in tubing before it can be recharge with freon.
It's complicated to do, so call a refrigerator technician to do that.
I hope I give you idea concerning your problem with your unit.

Freezer isn't cold, defrosted all of my food and the refrigerator part doesn't seem very cold either.

Hello,

If your refrigerator cooling doesn't seem to be working well, and you have no idea what to look for in troubleshooting your problem, there are some things you can do to try to figure out your problem without paying a serviceman to come into your home.
Freezing

Most new refrigerators come with automatic defrosters. Although this is a standard feature the drain hole in the defrosting assembly can get clogged with debris, lime, or even ice. If this happens the defrost will not work and there will be a build-up of ice in your freezer that begins to block the freon from flowing properly and causing heat to react improperly and cause your refrigerator to stop cooling.
Freon

Freon systems in a refrigerator are closed systems but on occasion you may need a recharge. Refrigerators use R-134a freon, just like in an automobile. The old R-12 freon is no longer available, so if you have an older model of refrigerator you will not be able to obtain the freon, and it will be recommended that you replace that refrigerator.
Seals

The seals that are on the door of the refrigerator and freezer can dry rot with time. When you begin to see the seals cracking or warping, if your refrigerator opens more easily than before, or if you see the the door does not close fully without pushing on the door then the gaskets around the doors will need to be replaced. They are held in place by clips and the replacement is an easy fix.
Holes in Lines

Let's face it, many people find ice in their freezer or the back of their refrigerator and will try some self-help without knowledge. They will grab a knife or fork and start chipping away at the ice. This is extremely dangerous. There is a great risk of puncturing a hole in the freon lines by stabbing at the ice. Since freon has the purpose of cooling most ice collects the thickest on the inside of the walls with the freon lines right behind the plastics. A better method of removing the ice is to empty your refrigerator, turn it off and leave the door open. If you want to speed up the process you can turn on a blow dryer and aim it at the edges of the ice. If you aim at the edges you will warm up the ice and create warm water which will flow down and help to separate the ice panel from the wall.
Uneven Refrigerator

If a refrigerator is not even on the floor it may not close properly. Rock your refrigerator and see if it seems to topple from one foot to another. The feet on a refrigerator can be adjusted by screwing in or out and leveling each foot individually until they are all even.
Non-Problem Warming

If your home is hot your refrigerator will work harder. If you put a lot of food in your refrigerator and freezer, your coolant will have to work harder, and it will seem to take longer to cool. It is just that there is a lot of food that is trying to freeze or maintain cool temperatures.

Good luck

Freezer & refrig not cold

change the filter. to do this recover the freon(gas), remove the filter , replace it by new one; do the vacuum and then charge again. Work must be done by a certified technician. do that at your own risk

Re: Sanyo SR4310W mini fridge freezer plate broken

Ok, I know I should not have done this but I did. I was impatient with the defrosting and stabbed my Sanyo SR3770s' evaporator with my Smith and Wesson switch blade knife. A very tiny hole, made a swooshing noise and now the fridge won't get cold. Can this be repaired for a minimal price? Perhaps just replacing the evaporator plate and reinstalling some freon, maybe, hopefully?
Let me know. Basically a brand new unit, hate to see it go to the dump!

two reasons I can think of, fan motor because of the whining description you descibed, and possible freon leak. I think the first is the problem!

I was trying to defrost this college sized refrigerator. I was using a screwdriver to try to break loose the ice build-up around the top freezer section when all of a sudden a heard a noise and steam...

Sure do you broke open the Sealed system this is where the freon (gas that cools the unit ) is you released gone forever...
Now you will need to have some one out to fix the hole vaccum down the system and recharge it but most likely just buy a new unit due to the cost involved in the repair. Live and learn never to use sharp objects in a freezer...next time use a hair dryer to unthaw

Ice forms in the section on top of the refrigerator

Judging by a similar problem I had with a dehumidifier, you may have a Freon leak or low freon pressure - (It's probably NOT really FREON - but something else).

This is a fair guess - from my dehumidifier problem. A dehumidifier functions the exactly the same way as a refridgerator - except it's not designed to "keep the cold in a BOX." Given the cost of a service man AND the cost of the Freon (it's expensive), you may want to pitch the Fridge and get a new one.

You might have to have a repairman check the charge of freon in the system.
