Hi, the card with the chip, more commonly called flash memory card is probably faulty and it is causing the unit to turn off by itself.

If the unit is starting without a card, then you will need to test your Sat Nav using a different memory card.

If you have maps and data on this card you can recover them using a computer , then attempt transferring them onto the new card.

You use this using a card reader that can be connected to a computer. Some computer may have built in card reader.Click here for an example: Multiple USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader Writer for SD T-Flash.

If the computer is not reading then card, then the content may be lost. In that case you can recover and download again the maps contacting Garmin.

If your Garmin is turning off even with a new card, then it is faulty, probably because of a short in card reader slot.
In that case the unit must be taken apart by a technician to be repaired.

A good thing to do would be calling Garmin at the number listed on the owners manual, checking conditions for repair, ensuring that maps on memory card can be recovered, and seeing if you are entitled to a replacement or how much repair will cost.

Please do not forget to leave us feedback.

Try doing a reset of your device.

Hold Enter and Page while turning it on. You will lose all your waypoints, tracks, routes you have stored so back it up to a computer first, before performing a reset..

If the problem persist after resetting, try removing the micro SD card and turning in the Device, if the device performs better, try to format the SD card andusing it..Tryit with a good SD card..

If you recently updated to the 3.90 firmware that could be part of your problem. Many users have went back to 3.70. Also if you have a class 4 or above sd card that could depending on which brand could be your problem..Try performing a software update to new version 4.0

We updater wont downgrade the version, here is the link to download the older version

Any one of the above solution should solve your issue..
Please leave me comment, if you need further assistance
Thanks for using FixYa!

Your memory card chip is corrupted so you get the device shut down...

Please buy a new chip. copy all the content from your old chip to new chip and use the new chip...

    This should solve your issue..

If you feel my solution as useful later, please accept this solution

My Garmin GPSmap 76CSx will begin to start up, but as soon as you release the power button the screen fades away.

This problem can occur when the map file is corrupted or can't be read. Try putting your sd card in a reader and deleting the GMAPSUPP file (in the GARMIN folder) and fitting it back in your device. Then reload the map from Mapsource onto your handheld.

Features on the phone device makes compatibility to media attainable among several innovative functionalities. The phone in question least has an extensive capacity to display the entire global mapping program. For example, multimedia resources either as maps, picture grams require an expansive device components to capture display for experiences. The mobile phone in question as manufactures default only provides telecommunication resources with feature observation of media impressions. Acquiring an alternate device that has an extensive expectation would provide the requested impressions. I have a Garmin 76CSx that freezes on start-up screen, no buttons have any effect. Only way to switch off is to pull batteries out.

I had the same thing. Seemed to be a faulty SANDISK 2GB MicroSD card. When I pulled it out, the unit worked again.

While down loading maps the 76CSX just quit. The batteries are good. When I turn on the GPS it starts then fads away like there is no power, yet I have tryed 2 sets of new batteries.

It sounds like a corrupted upload. Reset the unit and retry the upload.

Usually reset is done by pushing page and enter while powering up

Problem downloading maps to my 76csx

With unit off, press and hold ENTER and PAGE while powering on to perform a master reset.

Doing a master reset will erase and data in the device and restore it to factory defaults. So if you have any waypoints/tracks/routes you may want to back them up first.

You may want to update your mapsoure software first and see if that helps the issue. If not reinstall the software.

oh and double check your micro SD card to make sure its not damaged and is inserted all the way in.

Topo maps a mess of meaningless lines

Sorry for late reply. You need to select an area on your topo map prior to downloading it. For example, if you plan to go to Algonquin Bice Lake (access point 4), then you need to select the map around the area (starting from) Kearney upto the Magnetawan Lake and beyond. Mark waypoints from the put-in to the campsite on Bice Lake (best to compare of the topo and Algonquin canoeing map). Then you can click Transfer, click Send to Device (GPS 76cs should appear) to download it. On the GPS, enter the Find Waypoint button and you should be able to see those waypoints. Good luck for your next trip.
